Russia is preparing for a possible ground operation in Syria against opponents of President Bashar al-Assad. This CNN reported, citing sources in the Pentagon.
According to the channel, Russian troops moved into Syria and weapons for ground operations. According to sources of the channel, Russia strengthens "ground operation" in order to support the country's government army against the President Bashar al-Assad. Officials have questioned the fact that this activity is necessary to combat "Islamic state" (LIH).
The sources clarified that the ground armament consists of four units of artillery and multiple rocket launchers BM-30 "Smerch". Weapons were seen between the cities of Homs and Idlib. A few weeks ago about six guns were moved to the port of Latakia. Initially, US officials assumed that they are necessary to protect the base. However, one of the interlocutors of the channel believes that the most likely weapons required for a ground operation, which could begin in the next few days.
The two sides of the channel also said that Moscow sent to Syria to build radio equipment. It can be used to counter the radar of the international coalition against LIH.
