Ukrainian-Polish military aviation exercise "Safe Sky-2015" launched in Carpathian region. PHOTOS+VIDEO

The international Ukrainian-Polish military aircraft exercise "Safe Sky-2015" kicked off at Ivano-Frankivsk military airfield.

The airfield only sees solemn parade, preparation, and flyoffs. The main action takes place in the sky. By legend, Ukrainian MiGs fly to intercept an intruder aircraft captured by militants, its role being performed by Polish colleagues' transport aircraft. According to Air Force press center, this is how the participants practice counteractions against the terrorist threat.
Vasyl Bohatskyi, a senior officer of the International Military Cooperation Department of Ukraine's Air Force Command, explains: "Since Ukraine adheres to the course of European integration, possible future accession to the North Atlantic Alliance, the main purpose of the exercise is to achieve interoperability between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and NATO or the EU states."
The exercise, which active phase will last for two days, involves six Ukrainian-produced combat and transport aircraft. Meanwhile, the military are confident in saying that the equipment required to perform tasks in Ukraine is sufficient.
"Within the allocated funds, 32 contracts have been concluded with Ukrainian aviation enterprises so far. This allows increasing the aviation capacity by 10 percent almost until the end of the year. Two more Su-27 fighters are to be soon acquired from the plant. The process is underway. This is now one of the major issues - to reinforce aviation brigades with modernized and restored aircraft ready for operations," Air Force spokesman Roman Yurchylo said.
