When Russia began air strikes in Syria in September, it said it was fighting terrorism, targeting so-called Islamic State (IS) fighters. But Moscow also had geopolitics in mind.

And while it clearly had other foreign policy goals, could Moscow now be using its involvement in Syria as leverage over EU sanctions linked to the crisis in Ukraine?

Diplomats in Brussels are adamant that that's just what Russia is doing.

Since IS claimed responsibility for the Paris terror attacks and the downing of a Russian airliner over Sinai, EU officials say Moscow has been working diligently to try to convince individual member states that now is the time to engage with Russia and end its isolation linked to the war over eastern Ukraine.

The official collective position in Brussels, though, is that there will be no trade-off of issues...................

In this regard, asking rescuers Crimean residents to observe basic safety rules when using generators. In particular, never place the generator in a garage, shed, room or any other confined space, because even when you turn off the CO level may rise sharply within minutes, and the gas can be stored in the air for the next few hours.

UNIAN sat down with one of Russia’s opposition leaders, former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, to learn how the opposition sees the prospects for resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

In Russia, any discussion, whether it is an international conference or the analysis of internal problems, sooner or later, touches the Ukrainian issue. Off the record, many supporters of the Russian authorities as well as a few opposition members believe that it is the aggression against Russia’s neighbor that has put an end to the era of "Putin's stability." It all started with the annexation of Crimea and escalated with the invasion of Donbas. The Russians are becoming more aware that destabilizing Ukraine comes with a great cost.

The deadline of the Minsk agreements is about to expire, and sanctions against Russia may be extended if pro-Russian militants in Donbas do not comply with these agreements. UNIAN spoke with Russia’s ex-Finance Minister, one of the leaders of the Russian opposition, Mikhail Kasyanov, to find out whether there is a way out of this vicious circle, and what it is supposed to be like.

Mikhail, is it possible, in your opinion, to perceive the Minsk format of settlement as the best one?

My party and I welcome the Minsk agreements because they allowed to stop the war and the killings. This is the main achievement. Of course, there are problems in this document, as there it stipulates a faulty sequence of actions. But there is one important factor:  the agreements declare that the final outcome must be the transfer of full control over the territory, including the border, to the Ukrainian government. We look forward to the implementation of these provisions.

Russia should implement its part of the agreements, including the provision to stop the escalation. We already see that the leaders of various armed groups in these unrecognized territories were replaced by the more moderate people, more bureaucrat-type. The people who could disappear within one day, upon the order from the top.

Basically, I see that Putin and his regime are ready to end the conflict in Donbas. The question is that they demand something more from the West. If the West continues to insist on full implementation of the Minsk agreements, with the end point of transferring control over the border and the territory to the Ukrainian authorities, the current Russian authorities may agree. This is too heavy a burden. Putin and his regime are severely affected by sanctions. Sanctions work, they really do.

You said that the sanctions seriously affect Russia. What is the cost of the occupied Donbas for Moscow?...................

Investigators have discovered that Abdelhamid Abaaoud had pictures of places in Birmingham stored on his smartphone, according to well-placed sources, raising the chilling possibility that his cell was planning atrocities in Britain, according to the Daily Mail.

One source said the images may have been taken by Abaaoud himself, suggesting that he was able to enter the UK despite being the subject of an international manhunt even before the Paris attacks last month that left 130 people dead, the report says.

A source said the regular calls made by Abaaoud and the photographs found on his phone have led British police to the 'frightening conclusion' that he wanted to bring to the city the same carnage that he inflicted upon the French capital...............

A Russian warship fired a warning shot to prevent a collision with a Turkish fishing vessel in the Aegean sea, further straining ties between the two nations after last month’s downing of a Russian bomber near the Syrian border.

Censor.NET reports citing Interfax Ukraina.

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Sunday one of its warships, Smetlivyi destroyer, had been forced to fire warning shots at a Turkish vessel in the Aegean Sea to avoid a collision and that it had summoned the Turkish military attache over the incident.

The crew of the Kashin-class guided missile destroyer Smetlivyi spotted the Turkish fishing trawler some 1,000 meters from the Russian warship early on Sunday morning, the ministry said. The ship was sailing towards the destroyer and ignored calls for radio contact and other attempts to communicate.

Turkey shot down the Russian warplane during a Syrian bombing raid on Nov. 24, poisoning bilateral relations and triggering retaliation from President Vladimir Putin that includes bans on some Turkish food products and restrictions on flights. Putin called the incident a "stab in the back," while Turkey said it was defending its territory after previous border violations.

Donbas rebels and their Russian patrons are preparing a massive provocation to give them a pretext to launch an offensive in Donbas, says the head of an intelligence group in the rebel-held territory operating under SBU control.

“The Russians plan to strike in January,” the source says.

“Drug-addicts are being removed from the front-line troops and replaced by troops trained in Rostov, Russia,” the source says.

The enemy scenario is to stage a provocation, accuse Ukraine of the disruption of the Minsk agreements and launch an offensive, he says.

Ukraine army intelligence reports large concentrations of tanks and heavy artillery near Pervomajsk, Alchevsk and Donetsk.

Don't see it here, but I think the EU leaders are also due to discuss extension of the sanctions against Russia.
Italy didn't support this and asked for "discussion" on the matter, I understand.

Ukraine's government has managed to cut state debt from $73 billion to $66 billion due to debt restructuring and swaps for low-cost, long-term loans, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said.
===
If true, good going. Especially while having to fight a war against Russia.
The problem is - making cuts creates unrest among the population. Just look at Greece.
And in Ukraine the populist politicians will just jump at any opportunity to create a problem, never mind a nice bribe from Putin to do the same.

Most ships would sound their horn. Putin and the Russians use missiles and bombs.
Question - how primitive can Russian become? Answer - very.

Putin should sack ministers, but nobody dare call for Putin to go himself.

It seems only a couple of days ago the price was holding above 40 for WTI.
And now below 36. That, in itself is a fall of 10%. 10% of 40 is 4 dollars.
So - while these falls of a dollar or two seem small, in percentage terms they are quite large now.
