Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Wednesday 16 December [Ukrainian sources]
Wed Dec 16, 2015 7:19 am
Please scroll down to view news items added during the course of the day
NEWS:
Putin's terrorists fired 20 times at the Ukrainian people last night.
Sadly reading that one more soldier was killed in the ATO zone yesterday, and one injured. Ukr. Pravda report below.
Putin still trying to bring Ukraine to its knees, as he's signed a decree to stop trade with Ukraine.
Turkey's also getting away from buying oil from Russia which would further hurt Putin and Gazprom. Many other countries are following the same pattern. Bottom line is, Putin, from his acts against Ukraine is losing many clients. As the bully he is, bet that he'll cause ramifications from these moves against him.
WEATHER:
-6c real feel temperature.
Sunny. Temperatures slowly warming to -4 to -2C. Winds W at 10 to 15 km/h.
Update - actually a pleasant day in Kiev. Sunshine all day. But cold, of course. No snow. Roads clear.
Now - evening - clear sky still - and a lovely crescent moon.
Admin sent me to check out the fishing on the Dnepr. Nobody there. No ice at all.
Forecast - to be warmer by the weekend.
=========================================================================
Kyiv believes it will succeed in reaching an agreement at three-party consultations at the ministerial level, to be held in Brussels on December 21, allaying Russian concerns over Ukraine's association agreement with the EU, Ukrainian Deputy Economic Development and Trade Minister Natalia Mykolska told journalists on Wednesday on the sidelines of the WTO conference in Nairobi.
Ukraine is ready to discuss the possibility of establishing brief transition periods - lasting two-three years - for a number of technical regulations, said Mykolska, who is Ukraine's trade representative.

Putin still trying to force Ukraine on its knees. He's frustrated and still trying to use his bully tactics, as many other countries aiding Ukraine monetarily which he can't stand. He also wants the EU to stop the FTA with Ukraine, which he shouldn't have anything to say about it. Another way to stop Ukraine from regenerating its economy. So he's basically beating a dead horse, as whatever he tries is going to fail.

Poll Shows Russians Lose Trust In Television News
Wed Dec 16, 2015 11:42 am
http://www.rferl.org/content/russian-trust-television-news/27431558.html
According to a poll from the Moscow-based Levada Center independent polling and sociological research organization, only 41 percent of those who mainly rely on TV for news actually trust it.
That is well below the 79 percent who said they trusted television news in 2009.
===
And poorer people - the typical babushka or country folk simply either do not understand, or cannot afford a computer, good mobile, or the internet, and these people - of course - are Putin's main supporters. Poor and ignorant.

Kerry’s Mission to Moscow
Wed Dec 16, 2015 12:51 pm
After meeting with Putin, the Secretary of State calls for a new US-Russian partnership—but can he enact it?
Nation contributing editor Stephen F. Cohen and John Batchelor continue their weekly discussions of the new US-Russian Cold War. American Secretary of State Kerry’s meeting with Russian President Putin, on December 15, frames the discussion.
Cohen interprets Kerry’s public remark that when Washington and Moscow work together, good things happen, as a call for a partnership in resolving the Ukrainian conflict and for a coalition against the Islamic State in Syria—in effect, a major departure from current Obama Administration policy of Cold War and “isolating Russia.” But will Kerry be backed by the White House, Cohen asks, recalling that a similar initiative by Kerry in May was torpedoed by Vice President Biden and his allies in the State Department and Senate.........................

Wed Dec 16, 2015 6:49 pm
Vladimir Putin has ordered the suspension of Russia’s free trade zone with Ukraine, following up on threats that Kiev’s trade deal with the EU would cost it preferential access to the Russian market.
The move by the Russian president comes as EU members prepare to discuss on Friday another extension of sanctions imposed on Russia over its annexation of Crimea and its role in the war in Ukraine.

Hillary Clinton Takes to Twitter and Owns the Republican Debaters
Wed Dec 16, 2015 6:54 pm
Hillary Clinton took “chaos candidate” Donald Trump and company out behind the proverbial woodshed last night as they fumbled about on stage, and took a switch to them. The Republican presidential hopefuls made their fifth debate a celebration of ignorance, hate and bigotry, and Clinton called them on it by live blogging on Twitter. Frank Bruni called it a “tense” debate in a New York Times op-ed, but I’d call it “appalling,” and Clinton seemed to agree.
Who we met at CNN’s televised debate last night was, in Hillary’s words, “7 Republican candidates who are totally unprepared to be commander-in-chief.” And by blazing away on twitter as they spewed, she showed American voters why.
Echoing president Obama, she condemned the repressive rhetoric coming from the stage, tweeting,

Russia towed two oil rigs and an oil-extracting platform that belong to Ukraine from neutral to its territorial waters Dec. 15. .
The move is an example of glaring violation of Ukraine’s property rights and plunder of its national assets, Ukraine foreign ministry says in a statement Dec. 16.
Russia has again ignored the international law. The property must be returned to Ukraine, the statement says.

Wed Dec 16, 2015 9:02 pm
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk says Kyiv will suspend trade with Russian-occupied Crimea in one month.
Yatsenyuk said at a government meeting on December 16 that Ukraine's cabinet had decided that "the supplying of goods, work, and services to Crimea and from Crimea" will be banned within 30 days.
The only exceptions, he said, would be "personal items, socially important foods, and humanitarian aid."

Kiev 'ready to pay price' after Russia curbs trade ties over EU deal
Wed Dec 16, 2015 11:25 pm
Ukraine is "ready to pay the price" for a trade deal with the European Union, President Petro Poroshenko said on Wednesday after Moscow moved to restrict its own trade ties with Kiev over the accord that is due to take effect on Jan.1.
Controversy over the EU-Ukraine trade deal was the initial trigger of unrest in Kiev that culminated in the ousting of a Moscow-allied president in 2014. Russia then annexed Crimea and backed a separatist revolt in eastern Ukraine in moves that led to Moscow's worst standoff with the West in decades.
As Poroshenko arrived in Brussels, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his government to suspend a free trade zone with Ukraine from Jan. 1, making good on Moscow's threats to retaliate if Kiev presses ahead with closer EU ties.
"Ukraine is aware of these restrictions and the expected damage to the Ukrainian economy. But we are ready to pay this price for our freedom and our European choice," Poroshenko said in Brussels...............
