In the quarter-century since communism fell, Poland has become central Europe’s most successful economy, proof that democracy and rule of law can take root in former Soviet satellites. Now, that progress is under threat. In just weeks, Poland’s new conservative Law and Justice government has taken dangerous steps to rein in the constitutional court and media — echoing those of Fidesz in nearby Hungary. This is of deep concern not just for the EU, but for the US and Nato alliance.................
