Blizzards, high winds batter Eastern Europe, cause havoc [Engl]

The snow blanketed parts of Romania, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Poland, while Croatia’s Adriatic coast was hit by unseasonably low temperatures and high winds....
====
The past couple of winters have been so warm, I think people have forgotten what snow is like... And currently not too cold really. -10 is normal for late January. The coldest part of the year. Having said that, more reports of heavy snow east and south of Kiev are becoming to come in.

Today, the Orthodox celebrate Epiphany Eve (GolosUA)

Post by Nelson on Mon Jan 18, 2016 1:42 am

http://ru.golos.ua/suspilstvo/segodnya_pravoslavnyie_otmechayut_kreschenskiy_sochelnik_8597
Today, January 18, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Eve of Epiphany, or Epiphany Eve.
Eve - it's the eve of the celebration of the church, and Christmas Eve is traditionally connected with the fact that in this day need to cook wheat kutyu, sochivo - with honey and raisins.
Epiphany Eve - a night-preparation before the big Orthodox holiday called Epiphany Epiphany. This celebration of the Orthodox Church, is one of the Twelve. On this day, we remember the baptism of Jesus by John the Forerunner (the Baptist) in the Jordan River...

===
I think Epiphany - Greek word - "showing". "Presentation". Western tradition - Jan 6 - mostly the Three Kings visit. Orthodox, Jan 19, Baptism in the Jordan. Different.

Dark Jokes Lighten Gloom Over Russia's Ailing Economy [Engl]

Quite humorous )) Examples -
"In Moscow, there will be a fall of snow, the stock market, and the ruble."
"In the years of Putin stability, the ruble has stably depreciated in value and gotten four times weaker."
"Psychologically, the forecast is correct: There is no panic because we live in this and are used to it."
And my personal favorite - from the film - "Back to the future" -

"Doc, why are we flying into the past?"
"We're going to change rubles into dollars."

It became known, when Ukraine may get visa-free regime with the EU (Socportal.info)

..."That is, there was only a political process - approval by the EU Council. I think it is possible that during this year, in late 2016 or at the beginning of 2017 Ukraine will receive a visa-free travel to the EU ", - said D.Hribauskayte....
===
Just opinion. Pres of Lithuania. They keep changing this date... further and further back... I think they are afraid of a flood of immigrants - economic migrants basically.
A year ago they said - by the end of the year (2015). Then they said by the middle of 2016. And now - 2017.... And in 2017... ?!
I actually thought by July 2016. But that date doesn't look to be on the cards now - probably because of the million or so migrants from Africa and Syria and.. everywhere.

The United States does not rule out war with Russia in Ukraine

Post by Admin on Mon Jan 18, 2016 2:49 am

More aggressive than now, US policy towards Moscow could trigger a war with Russia in Ukraine.

Such an opinion was expressed by an apostrophe American political scientist, professor at the University of California (Berkeley) Edward Walker.

He noted that the war with Russia - this is the worst thing that can happen with Ukraine.

"If the White House will be headed by an ardent" hawk "who would demonize the Russian Federation, it can go much further of Ukraine lethal weapons. Among other things, it is about further increasing the presence of NATO forces in Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, the opening of the new missile defense bases on the continent and so forth, "- says an American professor.

"I do not rule out that in this case, perhaps the beginning of active rapprochement with the North Atlantic Alliance Ukraine and Georgia. Such a development would not be able to ignore Moscow. So it could provoke a war with Russia. And this war will be held on the territory of Ukraine. I would not want that to happen, "- said Walker.

Oil price falls further, towards 28 dollars a barrel

Post by Nelson on Mon Jan 18, 2016 3:12 am

Crude Oil & Natural Gas
INDEX UNITS PRICE CHANGE %CHANGE CONTRACT TIME ET 2 DAY
WTI Crude Oil (Nymex)
USD/bbl. 28.72 -0.70 -2.38% FEB 16 02:39:03
Brent Crude (ICE)
USD/bbl. 28.18 -0.76 -2.63% MAR 16 02:39:00
Natural Gas (Nymex)

===
Natural gas has also fallen a lot in the last few days.
Brent is now lower in price than West Texas Int. You don't often see this.
People must be simply buying now to stockpile.
Good news for Ukraine. Financially. And also, it should, theoretically, help dampen Putin's military spending, and imperial ambitions throughout the known universe.

Ruble continues to fall

Post by Nelson on Mon Jan 18, 2016 3:23 am

www.xe.com 1 minute ago

Rubles for one dollar, euro, pound
Inverse:  78.5549    85.5031    112.325

Basically nearing 80 roubles to a dollar.
The British pound has fallen about 10% against the dollar in the past month. And a similar amount against the euro.
What is wierd - the euro.. fairly stable against the dollar. I suspect it is being supported, but I don't understand why.
With falling oil prices reducing the risk of inflation, better to let the currency devalue a little, and then your good become more competitive in the world markets. (if priced in dollars).

The Ukrainian hryvnia -
Hryvnia for one dollar, euro, pound
Inverse:   24.4963   26.6565   35.0440

At the Bureau de Change at the weekend I say 25.8 / 26.2. For the dollar. 26.
The hryvnia has been fairly stable at 35 to a pound for several months now.

In the Energy Ministry published indicative prices of fuel at gas stations (Tyzhden.ua)

Post by Nelson on Mon Jan 18, 2016 3:41 am

http://tyzhden.ua/News/156224
I have noticed prices falling a little over the past few weeks, but not a lot.
Prices reached a high - after the currency fell - of about 24 hryvnia - for the best petrol. Today around 22 at Oko oko, as an example.
This guideline says it should be about 19.6.
But you can now get cheaper elsewhere. But in Ukraine, quality can differ markedly also.
Personally - I think the big companies have been making a nice profit as prices fall on the market, and the hryvnia has stayed fairly stable against the dollar. In my opinion, they have kept prices up. Probably run by some deputies in the Rada. It wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I post this, not for the story, but for the cartoon. Interesting - some rising criticism of Putin and his handling of the economy now.
Apparently Kissilev - for the first time ever - lead his tv news propaganda show - Russia1 - with a story about the economic problems.
Maybe people have stopped watching his garbage, so he's decided to report on something that concerns real Russian people? Who knows...

Saw the 1400 news on tv. Had some video of the Odessa-Kiev road. Frankly, it didn't look too bad.
Probably ice is the main problem, I would think. Admin is sending me out to go around Kiev on buses, the metro, trams!
The car is definitely staying under cover!
It should be fun. Hopefully I'll report back in a day or so! Not too cold at the moment. Maybe -7. Lightish sky.

Winter in Kiev (personal observation today)

Post by Nelson on Mon Jan 18, 2016 1:04 pm

Admin sent me out on the streets of the capital today.
-8. But it feels cooler. Quite a strong wind. The Dnepr now is completely frozen over, as are many other rivers.
On the metro, not too bad. Not as busy as it might be. But less room when you sit down - people wrapped up in several layers of clothing!
The capital has had more snowfall than some other areas. Basically, the further east and south you go, the deeper the snow.
The further west you go, the better the roads. Actually, around the capital the roads are fine. But walking - not easy. Compacted ice. Likely to remain now for some time. Tomorrow I'll do a bit more travelling, and then head back home to the suburbs.
Still reading that Odessa airport is out of action. They hoped to have it open by 1800, but I have read that there will be no flights in or out today.
Also read that the train from Odessa to Kiev is behind time - but at least running. The road is also closed, as are the ports, so the train is the only way out!

Kremlin wants "Russian" Donbas rather than elections, - Minister Klimkin on talks with Russia

Post by Admin on Mon Jan 18, 2016 1:37 pm

There is no constructive dialogue with Russia on holding real elections in the Donbas.

This was stated by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin upon meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark Kristian Jensen in Brussels on Monday, Censor.NET reports referring to Ukrinform.

"There is no real debate on the forthcoming elections, because we are not talking about elections. This is all about taking care of the Russian Donbas, destabilizing in the Donbas and the whole Ukraine," the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed, noting today he would inform the ministers of foreign affairs of EU countries on how the Ukrainian side fulfills its commitments under the Minsk agreements.

Klimkin recalled the fact of daily attacks in the Donbas by militants, armed threats against OSCE observers and the denial of their access to the border with Russia and other territories in the region.

In turn, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark Jensen was convinced Ukraine has fulfilled the vast majority of the Minsk agreements, while Russia undermines the process.

It is important that Russia fulfill its obligations. Ukraine has fulfilled the key points of the Minsk agreements. And now it is necessary that Russia enable the OSCE to freely observe the elections, that Ukraine regain control over the borders and weapons be withdrawn from the region. Russia should continue to fulfill its obligations, the minister of foreign affairs of Denmark said.

Rebels evacuating 6 plants from Donbas to Russia

Post by Admin on Mon Jan 18, 2016 5:56 pm

Russian occupants and their Donbas thugs are dismantling and evacuating to Russia at least 6 major plants, Ukraine army intelligence says Jan. 18.

The dismantling is done at Parkhomenko Engineering Plant, Engineering Plant-100, Donets Plant, Horyzont Plant of Mining Equipment, Luhansk Diesel Engine Plant and Poli-Pak Plant.

The rebels and their Russian patrons intend to ruin the Donbas economy.

Many plants have stalled production, with only several shops busy repairing the damaged military equipment.

zik.ua

Seems, either they're not getting the assistance, money or aid from Russia. Or their efforts against the ATO isn't working, so they're leaving Dodge. Sounds like a weak group with no workable plan.

I also heard some time ago that some of the terrorists heading back to Russia weren't allowed to cross Russian/Ukraine border. That's not a good position to be in. I guess that's why the other day, 100+ terrorists gave-up and surrendered to the ATO.

Not looking good for Putin-boy. I'd say that soon there might be a pullback from Russian positions, as it seems that's the only way there MIGHT be an opportunity to lift SOME of the sanctions. He's hurting and hurting big, as we've been seeing the price of oil and the disintegration of the Russian Rubble currency. Currently the Hryvnia has more value to the dollar than the Rubble has.
