In November, Gov. John Hickenlooper announced that Colorado will be receiving Syrian refugees and doing so with open arms, as we have welcomed other refugees for decades. The governor's statement came within hours of President Barack Obama's announcement that the United States will increase Syrian refugee resettlements to 10,000 in 2016 and possibly 50,000 in 2017.

Since 2004, Colorado has been among the handful of states receiving over 1,000 refugees annually, and in 2015 we took in 2,250 refugees, including five Syrians. It will surprise many Coloradans to learn that over the decade since 2005, Colorado has resettled over 6,500 refugees from Muslim-majority nations such as Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Obama administration and our governor are asking us to believe that Syrian refugees are no different from the thousands of other refugees Colorado has resettled - over 54,000 since 1980. But is that true? There are some good reasons to look upon the Syrian refugee issue as different..........................
