Tories back away from human rights pledge

The government has backed away from an election promise to scrap European human rights legislation, with Michael Gove admitting the planned British bill of rights will be subject to existing rules.

David Cameron had hoped that by asserting the power of domestic courts over Strasbourg ahead of this year’s planned referendum on membership of the EU he would boost the case for remaining in Europe.

The bill will replace the Human Rights Act, introduced by the Labour government in 1998 and based on the European Convention of Human Rights, of which Britain was a founder member.................
