Australian father of MH17 victim writes open letter to Putin (text) [Engl]

Very very intelligent letter.
Extract
...President Putin, after the Metrojet atrocity you were reported as saying of those responsible, “We will hunt them everywhere, wherever they are hiding.” You called on other nations to help in apprehending the perpetrators.
I ask you now to display the same resolve in bringing to justice the people responsible for the shooting down of MH17. It is deeply distressing to our family that your government’s actions in response to MH17 seem more designed to hinder the investigation than to assist it.
In July last year Russia vetoed the UN Security Council Resolution for an international criminal tribunal to be established to investigate MH17.
I understand also that your government has not made the primary radar data of the incident available to the investigation by the Dutch Safety Board (DSB) and stated that the data had not been retained. This seems extraordinary given that claims have been made implicating Russia in the shooting down of MH17. Why then would Russia not make available every shred of data in order to demonstrate its innocence to the world at large? ...

Human rights situation in Crimea: A brief analysis of the EP vote [English]
Fri Feb 12, 2016 1:19 am
http://anton-shekhovtsov.blogspot.com/2016/02/human-rights-situation-in-crimea-brief.html?spref=tw
On 3 February 2016, the European Parliament adopted a resolution "on the human rights situation in Crimea, in particular of the Crimean Tatars". The resolution reminds that "the Russian Federation has illegally annexed Crimea and Sevastopol and therefore violated international law, including the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act, the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and the 1997 Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between the Russian Federation and Ukraine"....
584 MEPs took part in the vote; of them 472 (81%) supported the resolution, 79 (14%) voted against it, and 33 (6%) abstained....
=====
Those against - Spanish communists, Italian and French fascist parties, ... amazing... just amazing.
The communists and fascists united in their support for Putin.
43 of the 79 voting against were from France or Italy. Putin is funding the National Front - right wing party - in France.

I would expect the Opposition block (old Regions supporters), Tymoshenko's lot, Liashko maybe, and Putin for sure to support this motion.

Donbas rebels flooding mines, Luhansk governor says
Fri Feb 12, 2016 3:33 am
Pro-Russian separatists in Donbas deliberately flood coal mines and destroy industrial companies, Luhansk Governor Georgy Tuka told Liga.Net Feb. 11.
It will be difficult for Ukraine to restore the companies after the liberation of Donbas, the governor said.
“I talked to experts who were involved in the rebuilding of Georgian enterprises after the Russian invasion. The Russians usually leave the burnt out land, deliberately destroying the infrastructure – hospitals, schools, bridges” Tuka said.
The Russians are also dismantling and shipping to Russia the equipment of Donbas plants. Sometimes the equipment is assembled in Russia, sometimes used as scrap, the official stressed.
zik.ua
This is an indication that they don't plan or think they won't be able to run the region, in the near future. So they destroy everything in site that can make income for them.
This must be a request from the Kremlin, which would also indicate that they don't expect to be there too much longer.
The troops as thought of the buildup on the Russian border is only for show. Why would they want to fully invade Ukraine and damage what would work for them to support the region, after all is said and done.
IMO, they continue to think and maneuver like youngsters that doesn't take much to see right through them, as many us experrienced childish strategies at homes in the past.

====
But only for a day or two. Predicting about 12 for Kiev, 16 for Odessa. Early next week. But then back to 3 or 4 by mid week.
But that is still above normal.

Naftogaz buys gas from Europe for less than $200 per 1,000 cubic meters [Engl]

http://en.interfax.com.ua/news/economic/324154.html
The national gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy is buying gas from Europe for less than $200 per 1,000 cubic meters, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister, Volodymyr Demchyshyn, told reporters after the government meeting on Thursday.
"Somewhat less than $170 [per 1,000 cubic meters] is the hub price, and a bit less than $200, including transportation," he said.
The minister said that he was informed about the purchase price with a slight delay, so it might not be the 'latest' price.
====
That's good news also.
Russia was wanting about 216. So about 8% less than "Russian discount" gas.
Yes, "discount" in Russian - another lie. Yet another lie from Putin and his cronies.

Euan MacDonald: Lessons from the past about Minsk II [Engl]

Another good article from the KP.
Is there hope yet for this paper than used to kiss Tymoshenko's butt on a daily basis?!
They seem to have got some younger, more intelligent journalists in. Maybe the Tymoshenko grovelling days of the Yuliapost - sorry - Kyivipost - are over.
We can all hope.
====
But back to Macdonald - good stuff. A couple of sentences -
...So as Putin sat at the table in Minsk, talking peace, he was fully aware that his forces were preparing for more war. And, no doubt, he was betting that the Western response to the Russian military seizure of Debaltseve would be weak and indecisive.
He was right. In the wake of the Russian attack on Debaltseve, the United States declared that the issue of providing Ukraine with lethal weapons to defend its territory was “on the table.” But even after subsequent violations of Minsk II, such weapons have never arrived.
Article is worth a read.

Bureau de Change rates
Fri Feb 12, 2016 10:43 am
Admin sent me out this afternoon to check on the exchange rates.
Amazing weather. It was really warm. +7. +5 when I came home. Not your usual temperatures for the first half of February, that is for sure.
At one bureau I saw
one dollar = 26.65 / 27.4
and at a second one, a rather better rate of
one dollar = 26.4 / 26.8
But compare this to the old days when the rate was 8.00 and - well, if you have a western salary or pension, your money goes a lot lot lot further.
Renting an apartment is half the price it used to be. Imported goods are still the same in price. But anything made or produced, grown, in Ukraine is much cheaper now.
So a tram ticket - the price in Kiev has gone up to 3 uah. But that is only 10 cents. 7p. I know some people in the US and UK who wouldn't stop to pick this much up off the floor.

I told that to wife about the cost of trams, which she says it's that same for Marshrutka's and she said, 3 here and 3 there. After a few trips it adds up for them that aren't employed.
Gasoline's going up and down, but it's still staying low enough to where Russia's hurting big-time.
A report I read, Gazprom ASKING for Ukraine to do business with them. Being the second largest country in Europe, Ukraine's a big moneymaker for Russia, but that's no longer the scenario, by nobody's fault but their own. The rest of Europe is finding other alternative sources. I imagine Gazprom and Rosneft, if Rosneft can stay afloat are freaking out on how to make the moneys they were making in the past.
All this is coming down on the little runt in Moscow. I had a poll in Twitter the other day to see who they thought would take Putin out or get rid of him, and the majority said it would be his own oligarch, a-la Hitler's clan placing a bomb under his seat. Won't take much C-4 to take him out.

French reporters to film director: “Ukraine – Masks of the Revolution” slanders our vocation
Fri Feb 12, 2016 5:40 pm
On Monday, February 1st, we were shocked to view the documentary by Paul Moreira entitled “Ukraine – the Masks of Revolution,” broadcast by Canal+, in its Special Investigation series—although it was not the thesis of the film that disturbed us. We as a group regularly cover extreme-right groups in Ukraine. We have reported that the war has made them more virulent, heavily armed, and that it constitutes a danger to the future of the country.
No. What profoundly disturbed us in this film is its lack of perspective on the complex issues rooted in the depths of Russian-Ukrainian relations. The confusion that results is exacerbated by a number of factual errors, by conflicting information, and also by shortcuts and a manipulation of actual events.
We cannot remain silent over undated images from YouTube, taken of torchlight marches of neo-Nazis occurring subsequent to the Maïdan protests, being inserted into video depictions of actual events. Or of mischaracterizations of the partisan affiliations of key figures in the demonstrations.
We also deplore the documentary’s inappropriate treatment of the linguistic questions that have been faced in Ukraine. These questions have certainly proven to be delicate ones on a number of occasions. But Ukraine is one of the most bilingual countries in Europe. Through an apparent lack of knowledge, Mr. Moreira makes a dramatic exaggeration when he refers to ‘Russians’ or ‘Ukrainians of Russian origin’ as the inhabitants of a country where national identity is not defined solely by ethnic-linguistic affiliation, at least not in 2016.......................
