Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Friday 27 May [Ukrainian sources] Empty Russian Monument to Stalin’s Victims Highlights Fate Of Executioner

Fri May 27, 2016 4:05 am
Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Friday 27 May [Ukrainian sources] 1464304330

Local dignitaries and the granddaughter of NKVD officer Valter Vand attend the unveiling of a monument to victims of Stalin’s Great Terror in Saransk.

www.rferl.org

In the summer of 2004, a group of activists near the city of Saransk made a gruesome discovery: Some 500-700 corpses buried in shallow mass graves in a forest.

They were the bodies of victims of Josef Stalin’s Great Terror in the 1930s. According to local historians, the victims were Orthodox priests, Muslim clerics, local teachers, collective farmers, and workers. Their names are unknown because the archives of the Soviet and Russian secret police remain closed.

"We brought our information about the grave to the government, to academic circles, and to civil society, " activist Nikolai Kurchinkin told the Saransk edition of the government newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta. "But there was only silence."

The activists hoped that the bodies would be exhumed and buried properly in the city cemetery. They hoped that a monument would be placed on the spot where the victims were dragged out into the forest and shot in the back of the head.

On May 23, however, a monument was unveiled on the site, one of the few monuments in Russia devoted to "the victims of political repressions during the 1930s." But after a single line noting that fact, the monument’s text then dedicates 12 lines to honoring one particular victim of Stalin’s Terror: Valter Vand, the former head of the local branch of the NKVD, as the secret police tasked with carrying out executions and many other forms of political repression at the time were known.

The unveiling was organized by the Interior Ministry of the Republic of Mordovia. The speakers at the ceremony included the deputy head of Mordovia’s Interior Ministry and Vand’s granddaughter, Nina Freiman. The ceremony was timed to mark the 78th anniversary of Vand’s own execution, probably somewhere near that very spot.

"This monument is not only for the victims of political repressions, " Freiman said, "it is a monument to their families as well, who in an instant became ’enemies of the people, ’ outcasts. This monument is for them, who shared the fate of their relatives, who did not betray them, who struggled for their good name until the end of their days."

Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Friday 27 May [Ukrainian sources] Empty G7 countries ready to expand sanctions against Russia if needed

Fri May 27, 2016 5:08 am
The G7 countries have stated that the extension of the sanctions against the Russian Federation depends on how Russia fulfills the Minsk agreements and respects Ukraine's sovereignty.

Censor.NET reports citing the G7 Ise-Shima leaders' declaration.

The G7 leaders stressed that the conflict in Ukraine can only be solved by diplomatic means and in full respect for international law, especially the legal obligation to respect Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

They also urged all sides to take concrete steps that will lead to the complete cease-fire required under the Minsk agreements. "We also urge all sides to fulfill their commitments without delay with a view to holding local elections in certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions as soon as possible in accordance with the Minsk agreements," the declaration reads.

The countries expressed hope that Russia will live up to its commitments and use its influence over the separatists to meet their commitments in full.

"However, we also stand ready to take further restrictive measures in order to increase cost on Russia should its actions so require," the statement notes.

Prior to the publication of the declaration, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was too early to think of lifting EU sanctions against Russia. There is no need to expect the EU to give up on the stance that has been followed during the last months, she remarked.

Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Friday 27 May [Ukrainian sources] Empty Savchenko on Minsk agreements: If they didn't exist, it would be even worse

Fri May 27, 2016 8:29 am
Freed Ukrainian pilot Nadiia Savchenko believes that without the adoption of the Minsk agreements, the situation in the Donbas would be even worse than the current one.

She said it at today's press conference, Censor.NET reports.

"If they [the Minsk agreements - ed.] didn't exist, it would be even worse... They put out the flames burning at that moment. While I can't say I find them completely effective, I am grateful to them for that," Savchenko stressed.

In addition, she commented on her attitude to elections in the occupied territories of the Donbas.

"As for elections, if we were alone, the Ukrainians, we would find a solution. We have many advisers. Elections are impossible now as the border is open. If we continue to have a lot of advisers and the border will remain open, we will end up badly," Savchenko stated.

In addition, she condemned the Russian occupation of Crimea.

"Russia did a terrible thing, it violated international law. We shouldn't have surrendered Crimea, there was a moment when we had to go and defend it. I went to the Donbas as it was late to go to Crimea... If a third world war breaks out - we'll return Crimea. If not, perhaps some international efforts will be taken," she remarked.

Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Friday 27 May [Ukrainian sources] Empty Savchenko names two ways to return Crimea

Fri May 27, 2016 9:20 am
Ukrainian pilot and MP Nadia Savchenko has said that Crimea will return to Ukraine either by war or diplomacy, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

"How to return Crimea? I felt that a World War III might start. If there is war, we will return Crimea to Ukraine. If there is no war, Crimea will probably be returned with the help of international law, by persuading people that they made a mistake. Perhaps, it will be not the people [who have made this mistake] but their descendants, who will recognize the mistake and fix it," Savchenko said at a press conference Friday.

At the same time, she said that it was difficult for her to predict how exactly and how quickly it would happen.

Savchenko also added that she would do everything possible to find ways to return the occupied territories to Ukraine.
