Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Wednesday 06 April [Ukrainian sources]

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 2:38 am

WEDNESDAY

Please scroll down to view news items added during the day

News -
Russia attacks 76 times. Another increase. Getting worse and worse.
Update - 4 soldiers wounded. No dead.

Weather -
Beautiful. Very warm overnight. +9. High today maybe 22. Normal would be 12. Update - high of 23.

Dutch referendum -
From what I gather this vote is more about exercising "real democracy" in Holland - nothing to do with Ukraine.
A sort of protest vote against EU bureaucracy. Vote takes place today. I expect a "no" vote. But -
Update - Ipsos poll saying a big No vote, and turnout at 32%. They earlier stated 29%.
These figure contrast starkly with earlier turnout figures suggesting 15%. (see my earlier posts below.) A bit strange.
If true - big problems for the Dutch government. And Ukraine also. Renegotiation?! Could be months of delays.
Dutch parties have said that they will respect the vote, if over 30%.

Poroshenko live now 0930 from Japan on tv

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 2:41 am

Poroshenko answering questions in Japan.
Live now on Espresso tv. Probably other channels also.
Answering in English.
Asked about visa regime. He hopes things will be simplified.
Asked why he hasn't sold Roshen. He said that it is difficult to sell things when there is a war going on.
(In his defence, he did say that he would sell it - but that was before Putin started the Donbass war big time.)

One Russian journalist asked why he doesn't talk about the Donbass and when will there be elections there.
Poroshenko replied,
When you take your tanks, guns, artillery and soldiers out of Donbass, then we will see. What are you doing there? It is not your country. It is Ukraine. ...
I paraphrase, obviously, but an excellent answer. "What are you doing in our country?"

On Panama.
No accounts were opened, no moneys were paid. nothing was transferred. The sole purpose was to provide a source for a trust for my public holdings. Blind trust.
If true, ok.
But you can guarantee that the Russian journalists, Tymoshenko, Kyiv Post, Putin and others will milk this for all it is worth.

Dutch journalist: Euroskeptics would put to a referendum the issue of leaving the EU, but it is forbidden by law. So they took up the issue of Ukraine-EU Association Agreement.

Dutch government to decide on Ukraine's association with EU by April 12 [Engl]

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 3:20 am

http://en.interfax.com.ua/news/general/335736.html
====
Looking like April 12 will be a busy day.
Scheduled Rada meeting - maybe a new coalition?
I expect the Dutch government to approve the EU AA with Ukraine. Even if there is a "no" vote.
I think people who are fed up with the migrant situation and also all the bombs in Brussels, Paris, will also vote negatively.
This referendum is more about the EU itself than about Ukraine. And I expect the Dutch government to say this.

The Ukraine referendum is cynical, manipulative and one we should boycott [Engl]

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 3:24 am

http://www.dutchnews.nl/features/2016/04/the-ukraine-referendum-is-cynical-manipulative-and-one-we-should-boycott/
....The referendum on Ukraine is not about the treaty. It is about testing Dutch public opinion on the EU in general. The campaign for a referendum was driven by anti-EU campaigners who have admitted they want to put pressure on the relationship between the Netherlands and the EU and deliberately looked for an issue they could use. Don’t care ‘We really don’t care about Ukraine, you need to understand that,’ Arjan van Dixhoorn, professor of history at Utrecht University College Roosevelt and chairman of the Burgercomite EU, told the NRC newspaper last week....

The Netherlands must help Ukraine with development of rule of law and democracy, - Dutch PM Rutte calls to vote 'yes' at today's referendum

Post by Admin on Wed Apr 06, 2016 10:16 am

Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte called on his compatriots to support the ratification of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement at today's referendum.

As reported by Censor.NET citing Ukrainski Novyny, he said this after leaving a polling station.

Rutte stressed that his country must help Ukraine with development of the rule of law and democracy.

A real two-faced jerk. Some days ago he states no Ukraine in the EU, then got pressure. Now he reverses himself. How embarrassing for the Netherlands.

"Russia has serious problems saying it won't last four days in war with Ukraine," - Turchynov replied to Naryshkin

Post by Admin on Wed Apr 06, 2016 12:00 pm

NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov commented on the words of State Duma Speaker Sergey Naryshkin about a possible war with Ukraine.

Censor.NET reports quoting Turchynov's Facebook page.

"Apparently Russia has really serious problems if even State Duma Speaker Naryshkin says they will not last longer than four days in a war with a country like Ukraine."

As previously reported, State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin said that if Russia had to wage a war with a country comparable to Ukraine by its potential, this conflict would last a maximum of four days.

Executor of two terrorist attacks detained in Odesa, - SBU. PHOTOS

Post by Admin on Wed Apr 06, 2016 12:22 pm

The Security Service of Ukraine together with the prosecutor's office have detained a local resident in Odesa - the executor of two terrorist attacks in his native city in April 2014.
Censor.NET informs referring to SBU press service.

The report notes: "Law enforcers have established that the detained Odesa resident was directly involved in the ignition of a supermarket and the office of one of Ukrainian parties, which were located in apartment buildings. After committing the attacks, the man went into hiding in the territory of the so-called "LPR" where he was involved in various terrorist activities.

"After two years, the terrorist leaders decided that man's staying in the government-controlled territory was no longer risky and sent him to Odesa with new tasks.

"Security Service officers detained the saboteur immediately upon returning. During searches at his place, law enforcers seized two improvised explosive devices filled with striking elements - screws and nuts.

"Сriminal proceedings have been instituted under article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

"The police is taking urgent operative and investigative measures to establish facilities chosen as targets of terrorist attacks."

Yatsenyuk doesn't want to lift import duty on used cars from Russia [Engl]

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 12:31 pm

http://www.unian.info/economics/1311605-yatsenyuk-doesnt-want-to-lift-import-duty-on-used-cars-from-russia.html
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk suggests that import duty be lifted from used cars originating from all countries but Russia, according to an UNIAN correspondent....
===
This would be a good move, BUT - expect strong opposition from car producers in Ukraine. And the offer of big big bribes to keep the taxes on cheap used cars from abroad high.
Ukraine has the highest priced cars in the world. I don't think this would change in the near future.
But if it did - it would be a very very popular move for the normal people. But when has the Rada ever acted for "normal people" in Ukraine? Never, in my opinion.

About 20 people detained, weapons found in raid at Lybid hotel, - Kyiv police chief

Post by Admin on Wed Apr 06, 2016 12:36 pm

Around 20 people detained during a police special operation in the Lybid hotel in Kyiv.

Kyiv Police Head Andrii Kryshchenko said, Censor.NET reports citing Chetverta vlada.

According to him, the police units were establishing public order as the actions of a judicial enforcement agent encountered resistance in the hotel.

"The police took measures to suppress public order disturbance. About 20 people have been detained, weapons have been found," Kryshchenko said.

Asked whether it really were the Aidar Battalion soldiers, Kryshchenko said that they "called themselves in different names, though, the police will check this information as well".

It was reported earlier that the Lybid hotel in downtown Kyiv was seized by armed men in military uniforms.

Austria seeks to lift EU anti-Russian sanctions — president [Engl] [Ru source]

...."I always say that sanctions are not beneficial for both sides," he said at the meeting with Russia’s State Duma Speaker Sergey Naryshkin.
"It is important to draw up a way to lift them in the near future and to overcome these sanctions," Fischer added.
Fischer stressed that Austria takes an active part in discussions on this issue inside the EU. "Our position in these issues is that it is necessary to consider the opportunity to develop cooperation with Russia in all the spheres," he added....

Jawohl, mein Fuhrer!!
Where was Adolf Hitler born? One guess - Austria. The Austrians always love a mad dictator. And Putin is no different from Hitler.
Boycott Austrian goods! Austrian Scumballs!!
Austrian President Fischer can expect a nice big pay packet - perhaps some Gazprom shares, as with Schroeder, former German Chancellor - from the Russian Fuhrer, Herr Vladimir Putler. Heil Putler, Heil Putler, Heil Putler!

Dutch Vote in Referendum on EU-Ukraine Trade Deal [Engl]

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 1:07 pm

http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/polls-open-dutch-referendum-eu-ukraine-trade-deal-38184454
THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Apr 6, 2016, 12:27 PM ET
....Exactly what will happen to the agreement if the Dutch vote against it remains unclear, but politicians all say Rutte's coalition government will have to take the result seriously. The advisory referendum is declared valid only if voter turnout is over 30 percent.

Rotterdam municipality reported that by 5 p.m. (1500 GMT), four hours before the closing of polls, turnout was 15.4 percent. In Amsterdam, it was 6.5 percent by 1 p.m. (1100 GMT). The Hague municipality said turnout was 15.7 percent by 4 p.m....

======
If below 30%, result is invalid. Soon we shall know.
Polls close at 2100 hrs Dutch time, 2200 Ukraine time. Less than 2 hours to go.
My guess - turnout of 23%. Or lower... It might not even get to 20%, looking at the latest figures. That would be good news for Ukraine. This country has suffered enough.

Low turnout for Dutch vote on EU-Ukraine trade deal

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 1:37 pm

http://www.ft.com/fastft/2016/04/06/low-turnout-for-dutch-vote-on-eu-ukraine-trade-deal/?ft_site=falcon&desktop=true
37 minutes ago
Dutch voters have so far given a resounding shoulder shrug in the Netherlands’ referendum on the EU’s controversial trade deal with Ukraine.
Turnout in most cities was running well short of the 30 per cent required to force the Dutch government to listen to the result. Although the vote is not legally binding, the leading Dutch political parties had agreed to abide by its result, reports Duncan Robinson.
In most cities, such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, turnout was struggling to get above 15 per cent, according to one pollster. One tally in Amsterdam had the capital’s turnout at just 13.7 per cent. Other cities were more engaged, with turnout running at 20 per cent in The Hague, which is home to most of the Netherlands’ political institutions.
Rotten weather across much of the country was expected to deter many voters – and slightly favour the “against” camp, whose voters are more dedicated, according to pollsters.
Polls will not close until 9pm CET, with a comprehensive exit poll – which will include a turnout figure – published shortly after.

Guilty by association:the Dutch Ukraine referendum

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 1:54 pm

http://linkis.com/wordpress.com/U31Rc
....The Dutch Ukraine referendum campaign may be a manifestation of various neuroses, but the cold hard fact is that it victimises a state, one grappling with both internal challenges, as a newly vibrant civil society squares up to the corruption and cronyism of the old guard, and external military and economic assault by Europe’s largest country, Russia. It’s worth repeating that a conservative estimate puts the number of lives lost in the conflict in Eastern Ukraine at 9000 (already as many deaths as in the Srebrenica massacre, etched in the Dutch consciousness). It also bears repeating that 193 of those lives lost were Dutch lives, aboard MH17, shot down by a Russian forces blunder as Russia attempted to up the ante by bringing in some new hardware in the form of the BUK missile system. Ukraine had had no reason to close its civilian airspace up until then as it was the less capable MANPAD system, not BUK, which had shot down several Ukrainian military planes in the preceding weeks.

Quite frankly, trying to blame Ukraine for MH17 is utterly cynical and duplicitous. It would be like blaming the death of Anne Frank on Holland rather than Nazi Germany. Another nee-sayer told me that corruption in Ukraine was a reason to tear up the agreement, despite the fact that doing more business with Europe would surely be a positive tool for reducing these tendencies. No chance. Corruption is ‘in their DNA’ I was told. This deserves to be filed where it belongs, next to ‘all Muslims are extremists’. Let’s call it what it is. The Dutch Ukraine referendum is xenophobia at the ballot box....

Netherlands votes on EU-Ukraine trade agreement

What has this vote got to do with Russia?
Imperial Russia still thinks it controls Ukraine. It does not. 10,000 dead bodies testify to that fact.
The Russia scumballs simply can't keep their nose out of Ukraine's business. Scum. Pure scum.

Turnout was sluggish during the day, with only 13.7% of voters casting their ballot in the capital, Amsterdam, by 18:00 (16:00 GMT). In Rotterdam the number was above 17%.

Turnout at '15 per cent' hours before polls close in Dutch EU-Ukraine vote [Engl]

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 2:47 pm

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/04/06/dutch-slow-to-polls-in-eu-ukraine-pact-vote/
....For the ballot to be valid there has to be at least a 30 percent turnout of the 12.5 million people eligible to vote.
Dutch media said only about 10 to 15 percent of voters had cast their ballots in the major cities.
A Dutch "No" to the two-year-old treaty with Kiev could pose a headache for the European Union (EU) and is being closely watched by Moscow as well....

15 minutes to go before the polls close.

Unclear if turnout sufficient in Dutch EU-Ukraine pact vote [Engl]

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 3:26 pm

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-3525852/Polls-open-Dutch-referendum-EU-Ukraine-trade-deal.html
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The result from an exit poll is too close to call if enough people have voted in a Dutch referendum on a free trade pact between the European Union and Ukraine, a vote seen as underscoring deep-rooted skepticism about this country's place in Europe.
According to the exit poll conducted by Ipsos for national broadcaster NOS, turnout was 29 percent. The poll had a margin of error of 3 percent for the turnout, which would need to reach 30 percent for the vote to be valid.
The poll was taken at 40 polling stations where around 80,000 voters were registered....

Nieuwe exitpoll: opkomst is 32 procent, grote meerderheid tegen [Updated exit poll - turnout 32%]

Post by Nelson on Wed Apr 06, 2016 3:40 pm

http://nos.nl/artikel/2097548-nieuwe-exitpoll-opkomst-is-32-procent-grote-meerderheid-tegen.html
Updated - from the same source - Ipsos. Now say turnout is 32%.
According to Ipsos is the attendance rate of 32 percent. The referendum is only valid if the turnout threshold of 30 percent is achieved.
But the turnout there is a margin of error of 3 percentage points. That is, after counting all votes the turnout 3 percent or 3 percent may be lower than in the first exit poll.

====
If this is true.... what will the Dutch government do?!
Maybe renegotiate with Ukraine. This could take many months. And delay the agreement.
Please note -
the post above - is updated from the 29% turnout originally stated.
Most newspaper reports are currently giving the first stated figure of 29%. But Ipsos are now putting turnout at 32%. +/- 3%.
Margin of error for the result is put at 5%.

A world order reshaped by Vladimir Putin’s ambition

Post by Admin on Wed Apr 06, 2016 4:39 pm

The image of Russia as weak and withdrawn from the international arena is wrong, writes Eugene Rumer.

Moscow is out to change the world order, according to General Philip Breedlove, Nato’s military commander.
