Russia plays a dangerous hand in Ukraine conflict (Financial Times)

Russia plays a dangerous hand in Ukraine conflict (Financial Times)

West should make clear aggression is not in Putin’s interest

Ukraine and Russia stand once again on the brink of open war. After weeks of elevated violence in the separatist Donbass, Russian president Vladimir Putin has accused Ukrainian forces of armed incursions and plotting “terrorist” acts in Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014. While a border shootout seemingly did occur, its circumstances are murky. Ominously, Russia appears to have exaggerated the incident as a pretext for renewed military threats.

For now, it seems unlikely Mr Putin would really want to risk fresh conflict, with all its dangers of broader escalation. After all, in his geopolitical stand-off with the west, some things seem to be moving in his favour. Turkey, after its failed coup, is again veering towards Moscow. In the US, Mr Putin has a Republican presidential candidate — albeit a currently faltering one — who has praised him and suggested Moscow should be allowed to keep Crimea. The EU has been rattled by the Brexit.....................

Russia ratchets up rhetoric against Ukraine after Crimea plot allegation (Financial Times)

Post by Admin on Thu Aug 11, 2016 2:36 pm

Russia ratchets up rhetoric against Ukraine after Crimea plot allegation (Financial Times)

Russia has ratcheted up its rhetoric against Ukraine following Vladimir Putin’s accusation this week that Kiev was “resorting to terror” and launching an incursion in Crimea , driving tension between the two neighbours to its highest level in months.

“We would like to warn both Kiev and its international backers that the harm suffered by the Russian side, the death of Russian servicemen, will not remain without consequences,” Russia’s foreign ministry said on Thursday.

The statement repeated allegations on Wednesday by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) that one of their officials and a Russian soldier had been killed in two clashes with Ukrainian forces on the border just inside Crimea — a claim Ukraine has strongly denied.

Both Moscow and Kiev said on Thursday that they were heightening military alert levels along the Russia-Ukraine border . The Russian navy also announced plans for exercises in the Black Sea to practice combating underwater “sabotage attacks”, while the spokesman for Ukraine’s general staff told Reuters that Kiev had started previously planned military exercises in the south of the country..................

Russian Foreign Ministry claims second "Crimean saboteur" detained. PHOTO

Post by Admin on Thu Aug 11, 2016 4:24 pm

Russian Foreign Ministry claims second "Crimean saboteur" detained. PHOTO

Russian authorities report the apprehension of another person charged with "subversion" in occupied Crimea.

Censor.NET reports referring to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Previously, Moscow mentioned the only suspect - Ukrainian Yevhen Panov.

While the updated statement notes that several persons from among the citizens of Ukraine and Russia, involved in the preparation of terrorist acts, have been detained with Yevhen Panov and Andrii R. Zakhtei being among them.

"They are making confessions," the ministry reported.

However, it failed to specify Andrii Zakhtei's citizenship.

According to information in social media, this person matches the description most. Judging by his Facebook profile, he lived in Yevpatoriia.

As previously reported, the situation on the administrative border with the peninsula turned critical early in the morning of Aug. 7. Since that moment, the occupation authorities have repeatedly altered the access mode at three checkpoints, either closing them or resuming their work in full or partially.

A number of Crimean media reported the introduction of Krepost (Fortress) plan aimed at tracking down five camo-clad persons. Eyewitnesses mention checkpoints set up on the main roads with the traffic police and OMON fighters stopping buses and checking passengers. At 4:30 a.m., Aug. 10, the Russian side opened the Kalanchak checkpoint near Armiansk that had been closed since Aug. 7.

On Aug. 10, the FSB released an official statement about averted terrorist attacks in annexed Crimea "prepared by the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine's MoD in order to target critical life-supporting and infrastructure facilities inside the peninsula." Further on, the FSB released a video with the alleged organizer of the thwarted "terrorist acts" in the occupied Crimea, Zaporizhia region resident Yevhen Panov.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, said that Ukraine "has switched to the practice of terror."

Putin also said he considered the upcoming Normandy Four meeting to be pointless in the light of the alleged detention of Ukrainian "saboteur" in occupied Crimea.

Putin's puppet of the so-called "parliament" of Crimea Remzi Ilyasov said the occupying authorities perceive the incident "as an act of aggression, in fact, a declaration of war."

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine denied all Russia's allegations, calling them provocative.

National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov described the hysterical and false allegations by Russia's FSB as groundless and called them another element of Russia's hybrid war against Ukraine and an attempt to exacerbate the situation in the occupied territory.

The Ukrainian MoD has refuted the FSB's allegations on the involvement of Ukraine's intelligence in subversive activities in Crimea and called them an attempt of the Russian Federation to justify its aggression in the territory of the annexed peninsula.

President Petro Poroshenko said that the Russian allegations are groundless and serve as "a pretext for more military threats against Ukraine."

Spokesperson to the U.S. Department of State Elizabeth Trudeau said that the Russian Federation's recent allegations on Ukraine's involvement in "subversive activities" in Russian-occupied Crimea should not distract the United States from the real issue Russia has created in Ukraine.

On Aug. 11, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko instructed that all the units deployed at the administrative border with Crimea and the demarcation line in the Donbas be on high alert.

Ihor Kotelianets, Panov's brother, claims Yevhen was kidnapped in Ukraine's Zaporizhia region and taken to the occupied peninsula.

According to Ukraine's Defense Intelligence, none of its employees has been detained by the FSB to date in the territory of occupied Crimea.

The police have qualified the fact of Yevhen Panov's disappearance reported by his relatives as a criminal offence under the article 146 (illegal deprivation of freedom or abduction) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's representative in the humanitarian subgroup of the Trilateral Contact Group Iryna Herashchenko says Yevhen Panov has become another kidnapped Russian hostage who Ukraine will have to liberate.

The representative of "Yandex" then told reporters that the main goal of the company is to "restore the competitive situation in the market and elimination of consequences of the violations that have been established FAS and confirmed by the court." The representative of "Yandex" said that if Google voluntarily fulfill key requirements underlying a decision FAS due to a settlement agreement, the company is also satisfied.
