Three EP groups called on Tusk to stiffen sanctions against Russia

Three EP groups called on Tusk to stiffen sanctions against Russia

In a joint letter, the leaders of three European Parliament groups called on President of the European Council Donald Tusk to raise the issue of stiffening sanctions against Russia.

This was stated by leader of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Guy Verhofstadt, Censor.NET reports citing 112 Ukraine TV channel.

According to him, the appeal to Tusk was also signed by leader of the Group of the European People's Party Manfred Weber and President of The Greens-European Free Alliance Group Rebecca Harms.

The MEPs believe that the EU needs a set of enforcement tools to stop Russia committing war crimes in Syria while tougher sanctions against Putin and members of his inner circle are the most efficient way to achieve this goal in the short term.

Guy Verhofstadt also noted that the EU Foreign Affairs Council had endorsed the targeted sanctions against certain Syrian officials.

The members of the European Parliament stressed that the European Council was to propose concrete coercive measures to put pressure on Kremlin should Russia continue violating the international law.

Poroshenko: Russia supports OSCE police mission deployment in Donbas

Germany, France and the Russian Federation supported the idea to deploy the OSCE armed police mission in the militants-controlled part of the Donbas, including along the border with Russia.

As reported by Censor.NET citing 112 Ukraine TV channel, this was stated by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko after talks in the Normandy format held in Berlin Oct. 19.

"We have agreed that no one will hamper the work of the OSCE. And in order to ensure preparations for the future elections, when the security situation will allow us to hold these elections, we are going to make an attempt to create the OSCE armed police mission which will be providing security both during elections and the subsequent transition period. Separately, the Russian side has also supported the need to introduce the OSCE armed police mission," the president said.

Merkel and Hollande threaten new Russia sanctions

Post by Admin on Thu Oct 20, 2016 8:45 am

Merkel and Hollande threaten new Russia sanctions

Talks with Russia in Berlin on the eve of an EU summit ended with threats of new sanctions over Syria and negligible progress on Ukraine.

The French and German leaders, representing the EU, and the Russian and Ukrainian presidents spoke for several hours in the German capital on Wednesday (19 October).

The mini-summit, the first of its kind in over a year, came amid Russia’s bombing campaign in Aleppo, Syria, and amid another flare-up in fighting in east Ukraine.

French president Francois Hollande and German chancellor Angela Merkel told press in the early hours of Thursday that the EU might impose new sanctions on Russia over its killing of civilians in Syria.

“Everything that can constitute a threat can be useful,” Hollande said.

“What is happening in Aleppo is a war crime … the bombardments by the regime and its [Russian] backers must end,” he said.

Merkel said the Syria talks were “clear and harsh”, adding: “We cannot remove this option [Russia sanctions]”.

She said the Ukraine talks made scant progress. “There was no miracle today … [But] it’s necessary to keep having such talks in order not to lose momentum”, she said.

Russian president Vladimir Putin said he might extend a pause in Aleppo air strikes to let in aid, but he also said “there was not much progress” on Syria.

He said “we could not achieve much” on Ukraine either, while urging Kiev to hold local elections in Russia-occupied regions in east Ukraine.......

Ukraine views $3 bln loan as Putin's bribe to Yanukovych to give up EU integration plans

Ukraine views $3 bln loan as Putin's bribe to Yanukovych to give up EU integration plans

Kyiv authorities consider a $3 billion loan from Russia negotiated between then-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2013 as a 'political bribe', which the Kremlin paid to encourage Ukraine to give up its EU integration plans.

In this regard, Ukraine is ready to defend its position in court, Ukraine's Finance Minister Oleksandr Danylyuk said in an interview with a Ukrainian TV channel. "We have commitments made to the IMF regarding the conduction of consultations on 'Yanukovych's debt'. But we have a clear position in court and we are conveying it. We are focused on defending our position in court," the minister stressed. "Meanwhile, according to statements of Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, the Russian side is not ready to negotiate, they put forward new conditions. But it is their right," Danylyuk added. Earlier, the Ukrainian finance minister stated that the country would adhere to goodwill commitments to the International Monetary Fund in terms of conducting negotiations on 'Yanukovych's debt'................

How did sanctioned Putin's aide come to Berlin talks?

As all eyes were on the high-level summit in the so-called Normandy Format taking place in Berlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin showed up at talks accompanied not only by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov but also by his close aide Vladislav Surkov.

Surkov had been banned from travelling to the European Union and the US as part of the sanctions imposed on Russia over the annexation of Crimea, so the question arose how the Kremlin representative came to Berlin and was seated next to the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert explained to the DPA newswire that an exception had been granted to Surkov for the occasion as it is allowed under sanctions regime in case of important international events............

Poroshenko must convince his faction to support special forfeiture law, of Yanukovych associates - Yatseniuk

Post by Admin on Thu Oct 20, 2016 9:15 am

Poroshenko must convince his faction to support special forfeiture law, of Yanukovych associates - Yatseniuk

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko must convince members of his faction to unanimously support the bill on special confiscation of assets derived from criminal activities of Yanukovych associates that will return $1.5 billion to Ukraine's budget.

Former Prime Minister of Ukraine, People's Front faction leader Arsenii Yatseniuk told reporters on the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada, parliamentary correspondent for Censor.NET reports.

"The parliament is going to consider the adoption of the Law of Ukraine on the State Budget for the next year today. For the budget to be implemented, the parliament must perform its key function of establishing justice by adopting a law that makes it possible to forfeit $1.5 billion attached by the government I headed. These funds were misappropriated from Ukraine's budget and siphoned off into 42 offshore companies having no owners except for the people close to Viktor Yanukovych," Yatseniuk stressed.

He recalled that the mentioned funds were kept in a state-owned Oschadbank in cash and government securities that were attached in order to be returned to the state budget.

Yatseniuk also called unacceptable the fact that a half of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction members did not vote for the bill after the president had publicly spoken in its support twice and called on the MPs to approve it. "It's obscene!" Yatseniuk said.

"In my point of view, the president must not just instruct his faction but meet with its members as soon as possible so that the Ukrainian Parliament will finally make the lawful and fair decision to confiscate $1.5 billion and spend them for social benefits specified by our faction. A half of this amount will be spent for the national security and defense, directly for the Ukrainian servicemen. Our faction offers to spend the second half for social welfare of nine million Ukrainian citizens," Yatseniuk said.

Mystery surrounds deaths of pro-Russian warlords

Pavlov assassination threatens to reignite full-scale fighting in eastern Ukraine

The footage flashed across Ukrainian and Russian television this week was gruesome: the charred and bloodied interior of a lift, remnants of two men’s battle gear and weapons, their shrouded remains being carried away from an apartment building in Donetsk.

The victims of the bombing were Arsen Pavlov, a pro-Russian warlord better known as Motorola, and his bodyguard, blown up by an improvised explosive while entering the lift in separatist-held east Ukraine.

Pavlov, 33, was a separatist commander, a Russian citizen and Chechen war veteran who boasted of executing Ukrainian prisoners. He filmed battles on a helmet camera and then passed the footage on to Russian television. Even during his 2014 wedding he wore combat fatigues while his bride sported a handgun in a shoulder holster over her dress.

The killings late on Sunday threaten to reignite full-scale fighting in eastern Ukraine, even as the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France agreed on Wednesday on a road map to implement the stalled peace plan in the war-torn region................

Russia violated the agreement signed by Reagan and Gorbachev - The New York Times

Post by Admin on Thu Oct 20, 2016 11:38 am

Russia violated the agreement signed by Reagan and Gorbachev - The New York Times

Russia is moving in the implementation of the program for the production of land-based cruise missiles
Two American newspapers, citing the statements of US officials and congressmen argue that Russia violates an agreement on intermediate and short-range, signed by Reagan and Gorbachev in 1987.
Sources say that the initiative of the US soon will be a meeting the Special Control Commission under the contract. INF Treaty is considered one of the agreements that ended the Cold War, writes The New York Times.

"According to US officials and legislators, Russia apparently moving in the implementation of the program for the production of cruise missiles, land-based, while the Obama administration argues that the emergence of such weapons violates one of the landmark arms control agreements", - says the publication.

According to the newspaper, the US is concerned about more than in July 2014, when the Obama administration announced that Russia violated an agreement on INF from 1987, making test-fired some missiles (her name not mentioned in the article). "Now US officials fear that Russia produces more missiles than necessary for the application of test launches. There is a fear that the Kremlin is taking steps to create forces that will eventually be placed on the bases, "- said in the article.

In addition, two members of the US House of Representatives sent a letter to the White House, which expressed their concerns, but did not provide specific details. "In our view, there is no doubt that the situation with Russian violation deteriorated significantly and now Russia violates the contract," - wrote Mac Thornberry, chairman of the Committee on Armed Services, and Devin Nunes, Chairman Committee on Intelligence.

The US is also arguing to convince Russia to stop the alleged breach of contract. "The Pentagon has compiled a list of military actions that can be taken in response, but their White House has not yet approved. Two years ago, the State Department official, who kuruvav control arms proposed to use "economic measures", but the idea of sanctions is probably not considered ", - the newspaper.

The author doubts that the Special Control Commission will solve the problem. "The fact that Russia has never recognized that such a missile there, although US officials say they have begun test-fired, possibly in 2008," - he explains.

US and Western officials told the newspaper that the committee meeting will be held in the next few weeks. US has not publicly said that Russian weapons are contrary INF Treaty.

An unnamed high-ranking US defense department said that "Russia may withdraw from the contract of INF, but perhaps not fully aware that this decision will mean." The source said the US military will consider a variety of countermeasures, including placing air defense systems to protect against complex threats posed by cruise missiles and other measures potentially offensive character, "says the article.

To be expected from Tymoshenko as being a Yanukobich partner, back when she was PM. Many of us know they wanted to be joined at the hip, let alone with Putin ($400 gas deal). It amazes me how her numbers are high, knowing her background which MOST Ukrainians are familiar with. That's why her numbers were so LOW during the last presidential election.

Reminds me on how blind many can be. Similar to the U.S. presidential election, where Trump's has a third of Republicans in a daze.

Poroshenko said that Ukraine continues to be totally committed to the Minsk agreements
