US urges Russia to influence Donbas separatists to restore peace in Ukraine

The United States Department of State calls on Russia to use its influence with the militants controlling the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions so that they take the first step toward peace in Ukraine.

Censor.NET reports quoting Acting Department Spokesperson Mark Toner.

"The United States again calls upon Russia to use its influence with the separatists to take the first step toward peace to eastern Ukraine and ensure a visible, verifiable, and irreversible improvement in the security situation," Toner said in a statement following the death of an OSCE mission monitor in the Donbas on April 23.

"This incident makes clear the need for all sides - and particularly the Russian-led separatist forces - to implement their commitments under the Minsk agreements immediately," the document notes. "This includes a real and durable ceasefire, withdrawal of heavy weapons, and disengagement from the line of contact."

"The brave monitors of the SMM have the full support of the United States, and we condemn in the strongest terms all acts of hostility and intimidation toward SMM monitors," Toner noted.

He reiterated that the OSCE mission personnel "must also have safe, full, and unfettered access throughout the conflict zone."

As reported, a United States national was killed in OSCE SUV blast April 23 near the village of Pryshyb in the militants-held territory of Ukraine's eastern Luhansk region. Two more monitors, nationals of Germany and the Czech Republic, were injured.

Ukrainian - Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Monday 24 April. [Ukrainian sources] Empty Putin’s friend emerges from shadows in Ukraine

Putin’s friend emerges from shadows in Ukraine

Close ties with Russian president prompts suspicion of Kiev’s negotiator

Viktor Medvedchuk has an unusually powerful godfather to his daughter: Vladimir Putin, the Russian president. The Ukrainian is also under US sanctions for “threatening the peace, security, stability, sovereignty or territorial integrity” of his country. So why is Mr Medvedchuk involved in negotiations over the future of separatist-held east Ukraine — on Kiev’s side?

Mr Medvedchuk, 62, has long been one of Ukraine’s most divisive and enigmatic political figures. Chief of staff to Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma in the 2000s, Mr Medvedchuk is close enough to Mr Putin to raise deep animosity among many in Kiev.

He has been photographed next to the Russian president at martial arts meetings and a Formula One race in Sochi. In 2012, Mr Putin visited Mr Medvedchuk’s family at their lavish villa in Crimea, where TV pictures showed them clinking champagne glasses. Many suspect him of being Mr Putin’s agent.

Yet Mr Medvedchuk has emerged as a main intermediary between today’s pro-western Kiev government and Moscow — and a potential key to ending the hostilities that started when President Viktor Yanukovich was toppled by street protests in 2014 and Russia reacted by annexing Crimea and fomenting the war in Ukraine’s east.

His role underscores the complex relations between the two neighbours-turned- enemies, and the tangled motives and loyalties of many of Ukraine’s political elite.......................
