Crimea - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 26 August. [Ukrainian sources] Empty New York Times has released a new anti-Ukrainian article

Sat Aug 26, 2017 11:29 am
New York Times has released a new anti-Ukrainian article

American expert Michael Kofman said that providing lethal weapons to Ukraine could become a "deadly mistake" in the United States

The delivery of lethal weapons to Ukraine could become a "deadly mistake" of the United States, writes well-known American expert Michael Kofman on New York Times.

The expert believes that such a decision could lead to an "indirect war with Moscow," in which Washington "is not ready to win."

"Theoretically, assistance to Ukraine is capricious, but the lack of public debate and the suddenness of this announcement is alarming. While Kyiv's arsenal may look like a light political victory, this may be a bad policy, "says Kofman.

He is assessing Washington's plans to provide Ukraine with $ 50 million anti-tank weapons.

The expert recalls that the United States has already provided weapons and trained moderate Syrian opposition, but the plan was "ill-considered" and led to Russia increasing its military support to the Syrian government.

In the case of Ukraine, the expert says, the interests of the Kremlin are much bigger, so you can expect a stronger reaction.

In addition, Kofman continues, providing Javelin anti-tank missile complexes would be "untimely", since in the past two years there were no major offensive actions of Russia or significant loss of territory.

However, even if Ukraine gained this weapon, given the "huge inequality of forces" between the two countries, several anti-tank complexes would not change the situation.

Therefore, the expert calls on the White House to think before sending a "signal" to Moscow, because "there are a lot of people in the Kremlin who want to send a return signal."

"A violent attempt to provide Javelin missiles to Ukraine is in fact a political decision that would transform the conflict between Russia and Ukraine into an indirect war between the United States and Russia. It is clear that Ukrainians can dream that Washington will engage in conflict, but the American political leadership must remember national interests. Instead of providing lethal weapons to Ukraine, Washington should focus on allies in NATO, "Michael Kofman writes in the New York Times.

As reported, republican senator John McCain once again called on President Donald Trump to begin deliveries of lethal weapons to Ukraine .

Recall that the New York Times , referring to the findings of the Missile Specialist at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), voiced the assumption that the Hwasong-14 intercontinental ballistic missile launched in North Korea (DPRK) in July was equipped with a Soviet-style rocket engine RD-250. The most likely supplier of technologies for the Korean ICBM engine in the publication is the Ukrainian SE "Pivdenmash" (Dnipro), which, according to NYT, "remained one of the main manufacturers of Russian missiles even after Ukraine gained independence".

The secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksandr Turchynov, stated in response that the enterprises of the Ukrainian defense and aerospace complex did not supply weapons and military technology to North Korea, and the information on this "has no grounds, is provocative in content, and, most likely , Provoked by Russian special services to cover their own crimes ".

The Yuzhmash plant also denied the publication of The New York Times, calling the information of the American edition a provocation.

Council pointed to a new wave of pro-Russian propaganda in the West

In turn, Volodymyr Aryev, a parliamentary deputy from the BPP, called this article another wave of Russian lobbyism in The New York Times.

As reported by the "Apostrophe", former US ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst criticized the arguments of opponents of providing Ukraine with lethal weapons.

TRANSLATION:
New wave of pro-Russian lobbyism in NYT. After the "deliveries" of the DPRK engineers, an article on the forehead: "Supplying weapons to Ukraine is a deadly mistake for the United States." Before The Economist on Kiev legs wiped off. Now attacks on Ukraine will intensify in the geometric progression. And not only from the Moscow lice, but also from the domestic spit. However, we will stand, I know!

In Ukraine, they gave a forecast on the date of Poroshenko's meeting with Putin

A full-fledged meeting of leaders of the Nordic countries (Ukraine, France, Germany, Russia) may take place not earlier than October or November.

Such an opinion was expressed by international expert Andrey Buzarov in an interview with "Apostrophe".

"There will be German elections in September, everyone will be waiting for the election or re-election of the chancellor. If a new chancellor is elected, it is logical to assume that there will not be any meetings in September, and most likely it will take place in October or November, if it will be Agreement of the Russian Federation", - said the expert.

According to him, before the meeting of the Channel Four, the German Chancellor must be legally approved in the respective elections.

"I do not think that Angela Merkel is a serious competitor, most likely she will remain," said Buzarov.

He added that within the framework of the planned meeting a lot of clarifying the talks of the US special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker with the assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Vladislav Surkov.

Russian propagandist got into the base of the "Peacemaker" for the story of the parade in Kyiv,

The Russian propagandist of the First Channel, Anna Kurbatova , who is the author of the story of the Independence Day celebration in Kyiv, got into the "Peacemaker" base.

A Russian profile appeared in the "Purgatory" section on August 26. It is noted that Kurbatova is engaged in anti-Ukrainian propaganda, manipulation of socially important information and a narrative outline of events.

Recall that on Aug. 24, the "First Channel" released a plot about the celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine. The crew of a TV channel banned in Ukraine freely moved around Kiev and shot a frankly anti-Ukrainian plot.

As reported by "Apostrophe", a Ukrainian VGTRK correspondent, Tamar Nersesyan , who participated in the creation of the plot about the Bandershtat Music Festival , was previously dispatched from Ukraine .

Media learned about the arrival of former KGB agents to protect the head of North Korea

About 10 former KGB staff members arrived in Pyongyang to protect North Korea's head Kim Jong-il in the event of an assault on US or South Korean intelligence services.

This is reported by the Japanese edition of Asahi Shimbun with reference to sources in the capital of the DPRK.

Former KGB agents who served in anti-terrorism units arrived in the DPRK in February. The task before them is to instruct the North Korean leader to prevent possible terrorist attacks and to respond properly in the event of an attack.

Sources of the publication report that DPRK's authorities are particularly afraid of attacks by US intelligence agencies using drones. In addition, they hope that former KGB agents will help them resist attempts to create a network of CIA agents inside the DPRK.

Crimea - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 26 August. [Ukrainian sources] Empty Russia doesn't allow the UN peacekeepers to enter the Donbas

Sat Aug 26, 2017 12:13 pm
Russia doesn't allow the UN peacekeepers to enter the Donbas

Russia blocks the introduction of UN peacekeepers into the conflict zone in the Donbass.

This was stated by First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Head of the Mission of Ukraine to NATO Vadim Prystaiko on Radio Liberty.

He said that the Ukrainian government is considering various options for peace in the Donbass.

"If the Minsk treaties have not brought peace, then there may be some additional mechanisms that we must use as a Ukrainian government to ensure peace for our people. That is why we are talking about peacekeeping forces in any format ... The option of arming the OSCE's light weapons mission was discussed, so that they feel more confident and could visit the places to visit. Another option is to provide United Nations peacekeepers. Of course, we know who is blocking it - the same Russia, which stands behind the back of the militants ", - said Pristayko.

Recall that on July 7, Vadim Prysyaika was appointed head of the mission of Ukraine to NATO .

Earlier it was reported that Poroshenko presents the idea of introducing peacekeepers to the Donbas at a session of the UN General Assembly.

Also, the issue of introducing a UN peacekeeping mission to the Donbas was discussed during a telephone conversation with the leaders of the "Norman Four" countries.

Crimea - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 26 August. [Ukrainian sources] Empty Pressure on Ukrainian reformers and anti-corruption gains momentum

Sat Aug 26, 2017 12:16 pm
Pressure on Ukrainian reformers and anti-corruption gains momentum

With the approach of the presidential elections of 2019, reforms in Ukraine are increasingly taking second place.

This is written by The Economist, reports Censor.

In a video that was distributed by users of the Ukrainian segment of social networks, a leading American news channel, News24, said: "State authorities are reporting on the progress achieved in the investigation into the proceeds of the anti-corruption activist Vitaliy Shabunin."

However, the problem is only that there is no such TV channel. A "host" on the video - no journalist, and the hired actor Michael-John Wolfe.

"I thought this video was a rally from his friends," he said.

These fabricated "news" indicate that the atmosphere in which Ukrainian anti-corruption activists, journalists and reform-minded officials work is becoming increasingly hostile.

"I can not get rid of the feeling that we are experiencing counterrevolution," - said historian of the Ukrainian Catholic University Yaroslav Hrytsak.

The publication notes that in Ukraine there is resistance to reforms, in particular the work of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, which was established last year. The executive director of Transparency International Ukraine Yaroslav Yurchishin commented on the publication that, having allowed the bureau to begin work, the political elites "opened Pandora's box". Now they are trying to close it.

Last spring, the Ukrainian parliament passed a law that required non-governmental organizations and their employees to file declarations, which caused a number of condemnations from the West.

Editors of the Ukrainian media are concerned that the SBU is monitoring journalists, although President Petro Poroshenko denies this. Anti-corruption activists are increasingly confronted with the fact that they are called "Putin agents" or "grantees". In April, near the house of a member of the Kyiv city council, reformer Olga Balitskaya, a group of people arranged a "funeral." They brought her coffin to her house with her photo.

"It's one thing when someone criticizes you on Facebook, and quite another when you are threatened with death," Balitskaya said.

The publication also recalls the attack on the Anti-Corruption Center. One of the deputies charged against the organization that it allegedly exists on the money of the US government. And the tax police began an investigation into the incomes of its chairman Vitaly Shabunin. When the protesters gathered near his house, the journalists noticed an SBU officer who was watching them. The service insists that he happened to be there by accident. In addition, Shabunin struck a blogger Vsevolod Filimonenko, who for many months pursued and insulted himself and his colleagues. For this, the chairman of the Center for Combating Corruption faces three years in prison.

The CPC believes that this campaign aims to discredit the NABU and those who support it. In the spring, the bureau conducted the first arrests of high-ranking officials, in particular ex-head of the fiscal service Roman Nasirov and influential deputy Nikolai Martynenko.

"The deeper we dig, the more resistance we have," the director of the NABU Artem Sytnik told the publication.

The next big battle, he said, concerns ships that deliberately deal only with small officials. Even a man who tried to bribe a job in the National Academy of Science, escaped responsibility.

The reformers want to create a new independent anti-corruption court that would consider the views of the anti-corruption prosecutor. In the past, the West has helped push through such initiatives by setting the conditions for a new tranche of assistance from the IMF or the EU. But the Ukrainian economy has stabilized, and the EU has granted Ukraine a visa-free regime. Therefore, the leverage of influence has become less. And with the approach of the presidential elections of 2019, reforms are increasingly becoming secondary.

Moscow is responsible for peace in the Donbass, - Vatican

Crimea - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 26 August. [Ukrainian sources] Censor_news_big3

The Secretary of State of the Vatican, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, said that it is Moscow that is responsible for peace in a number of regions of the world.

As informs Censor.NET with reference to Deutsche Welle , he stated this after the visit to Russia.

Russia "has a great responsibility for the resumption of peace," the cardinal said.

Parolin has noticed, that the Ukrainian question causes "the big concern" in Vatican.

"First of all, the Holy See insists on the solution of humanitarian aspects, starting with the important initiative of the Pope in Ukraine... One of the topics is the release of prisoners," he stressed.

Паролин considers, that the Russian authorities should put interests of the world over all others. He said that this was exactly what he said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the Secretary of State of the Vatican, this communication was very constructive.

Moscow asks Kishinov not to discuss in the UN withdrawal of RF troops from Transnistria - Ambassador of Moldova

Ambassador of Moldova to Russia Andriy Negutza said that Moscow had asked Chisinau to abandon plans to discuss at the General Assembly of the UN the topic of the withdrawal of foreign military from its territory.

This is reported by Tsensor.NET with reference to Gazeta.ru .

Negut said that on the eve of the day, he handed over to the Moldovan government one of the theses of the Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Ryabkov, which was that "there is a request from Russia that Moldova does not insist on inclusion."

"I was thanked for the fact that I passed all this conversation and, of course, these days it is necessary to make a decision," said Negutz.

Recall that in July the Moldovan Parliament accepted a statement on the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Transnistria. Pro-Russian-prime minister of Moldova Igor Dodon called the statement of deputies provocative.

Transnistria, which is home to mostly Russian-speaking population, proclaimed independence from Moldova in 1990. The international community considers the so-called republic part of Moldova. Russia explains the presence of troops in Transnistria as a "peacekeeping operation".

Ukraine has risen in Moody's credit rating and has received a positive outlook

Crimea - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 26 August. [Ukrainian sources] Censor_news_big3

The rating agency Moody's Investors Service has increased ratings of the Ukrainian government in Ukrainian and foreign currency by one step, from Caa3 to Caa2.

It is reported by Tsensor.NET with a link to the agency's website.

Moody's also changed the forecast from "stable" to "positive".

Such positive changes in the rating were the result of structural reforms in the state. According to Moody's, it is precisely they who can help the government cope with the debt burden. The role of the country in foreign markets has also played a role.

Further reforms in Ukraine can lead to improved reliability of its internal and external debts.

"Such an impetus for reforms will also support the restoration of Ukraine's access to world capital markets, which will facilitate the refinancing of large external debt payments that will come from 2019," the agency said.

But the current increase in the rating is limited to only one step - from Caa3 to Caa2. The reason is the external debt of the country, payment of which will begin in a few years and will require significant financing in foreign currency, the agency Moody's said.

US Special Representative Volker: Ukraine is not ready yet to join NATO

US Special Envoy for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, said that he "does not believe" at the moment that Ukraine is ready to join NATO.

He said this in an interview with "Direct".

"I still do not believe that Ukraine is ready to join NATO, and NATO is ready to accept it in the current situation," Volker said.

He emphasized that joining the Alliance takes a lot of time and Ukraine, in particular, needs to carry out all necessary reforms.

"I very much believe that Ukraine will be able to carry out reforms and restore its economy. Ukraine is not yet ready to join NATO in security, "added the US special envoy.

Speaking about international experience, Volker gave examples of Croatia, Hungary, Montenegro and Albania, who fought corruption, carried out economic and political reforms, "as well as established relations with their neighbors."

"This is all to be done. In Ukraine, corruption is a magic thing that just does not disappear, "Volker said.

Earlier, Volker said that to return to Ukraine territories of the occupied Donbass, it is necessary to withdraw from there Russian troops.
