Giving weapons to Ukraine: Two positions are discussed in the Trump administration

Richard Weitz, Senior Researcher and Director, Center for Military-Political Analysis at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC, Richard Weitz said that the administration of US President Donald Trump considers the issue of supplying Ukraine with lethal defensive weapons , but at the same time the risks that it might entail are under consideration.

This analyst told in an interview with "Apostrophe".

"The discussion continues and I do not know what the decision of the administration will be. The argument in favor of the solution is that it will increase the price of support (militants and the war on the Donbass -" Apostrophe ") for Russia, since with the stronger Ukrainian Armed Forces it is necessary more persistent intervention, "says Weitz.

According to him, the provision of weapons to Ukraine would show solidarity and US leadership and would increase NATO support for Ukraine.

"The moral argument is that Ukrainians are ready to die for their land, and the United States must give them the means of defense they want," he said.

At the same time, the counterargument for the delivery of lethal weapons is the reluctance of the West and the United States to be subjected to Russian threats and provoke escalation.

"And because of its geographical proximity and asymmetry in opportunities, Ukraine will lose in direct contact, and the United States will not interfere. And everything will end in the likeness of the scenario we have seen in the past: in 1956 in Budapest, in 1968 in Prague, what was after the war in Iraq and can happen now in Syria, and what happened in Georgia in 2008. You express support, which then evaporates, "says Weitz.

According to him, both arguments are worthy. At the same time, the analyst did not begin to name which of the options is correct.

What to expect from the Kremlin in the Donbas: Putin's three scenarios were named in the USA

To date, the Russian Federation is satisfied with the status quo in the Donbas, but it is impossible to exclude other scenarios - the complete withdrawal of Russia from the east of Ukraine or vice versa - attempts to annex these territories.

A senior research fellow and director of the Center for Military-Political Analysis at the Hudson Institute in Washington, an expert on the issues of the Asia-Pacific region, US national security issues, arms control, non-proliferation and other issues, Richard said in an interview with "Apostrophe". Weitz

"In my understanding of the goals and policies of the Russian leadership, the current situation (in Donbas, ed.) Is seen as favorable for Russia: it is not very expensive, in the majority of cases, the Russian influence is realized with the help of puppets, indirect means, losses seem modest," he said.

Weitz said that at the same time, the war on the Donbas complicates Ukraine's accession to NATO and the EU, weakening in some way the Ukrainian government, since it creates difficulties in state planning, there may be internal opponents who call for an agreement with Russia.

"The alternative could be Russia's complete withdrawal from Donbas, the restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty could lead to improved relations between Ukraine and Russia, the main source of sanctions support in the West would disappear, but it seems to me that for Russia, the possible dividends are less than the risk of losing their leverage impact on the whole of Ukraine", - said the expert.

He added that there is another alternative - Russia's great persistence in an attempt to annex these territories or to declare them independent, as in the north of Georgia. But this could mean for Russia a higher price for the direct support of the "republics", will strengthen anti-Russian policy, not even so much in the US, but in Europe.

"But I would still not exclude any of the options. I think Russia is satisfied with the status quo, but under appropriate conditions, it can go one way or another, however, while they do not look like the best options," he summed up.

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Hungary Peeter Syyarto summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to the Foreign Ministry and ordered the Hungarian diplomats to suspend Ukraine's support in international organizations.

Radio Liberty reports.

Peiter Sjyrto ordered that Hungarian diplomats do not support any Ukrainian initiative in international organizations, and that Hungary will no longer support important decisions for Ukraine, the newspaper writes.

The spokeswoman for the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tamas Menzier, said that the reform was a reform of education in Ukraine, which "makes it impossible to get Ukrainian minorities, including 150,000 Hungarian minorities, education in their native language."

"At all the UN, OSCE and European Union forums, Budapest will raise the issue of amending the language article of the Law of Ukraine on Education," Menzer said.

UKRAINE - Ukraine News in brief. Monday 11 September. [Ukrainian sources] Empty Ruling Party Dominates Russian Elections Amid Low Turnout

Mon Sep 11, 2017 9:09 am
Ruling Party Dominates Russian Elections Amid Low Turnout

The ruling United Russia party has dominated a slew of regional and local elections marked by low turnout and claims of voter suppression, but liberal opposition candidates appeared to gain a toehold in Moscow with a strong showing in races for district councils, according to early results, media reports, and statements by politicians.

The September 10 elections, the last major vote before a presidential ballot in March 2018, were a test of President Vladimir Putin's grip on the country and of a new strategy for opponents sidelined after years of increasing Kremlin control over the political system.

Incumbent Kremlin allies and United Russia candidates were headed for victory in many of the races for governorships and regional and local legislatures in dozens of regions across Russia, from the western exclave of Kaliningrad to the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East.

But opposition leaders, including prominent Kremlin critics, claimed victory in several Moscow districts, including Putin's own voting precinct southwest of the Kremlin. The newspaper Novaya Gazeta reported that opposition candidates were on track to win a majority of seats in 14 of the dozens of administrative districts of the capital.

Partial returns indicated that nearly 180 candidates supported by liberal former State Duma Deputy Dmitry Gudkov and the Yabloko party won seats in Moscow district councils, and opposition activist Ilya Yashin said he and his allies won seven seats in one of the councils while United Russia won three.

Moscow Election Commission Chairman Valentin Gorbunov said preliminary results suggested United Russia won about 77 percent of the 1,502 district-council seats being contested in the capital, while Yabloko could win nearly 12 percent and independent candidates about 7 percent. "Muscovites' political preferences are changing," he said.

Pushed out of national politics since Putin came to power in 2000 and tightened control over elections, opposition activists and groups such as Gudkov, Yashin, and the Yabloko party are focusing on municipal issues and mounting a grassroots campaign to claw back. In Moscow, they have their eye on a mayoral election due in September 2018.

The projected opposition victories in Moscow were exceptions in elections in which the newspaper Vedomosti said that "representatives of the party of power won almost everywhere."

Officials said the incumbent head of the Buryatia region, Aleksei Tsydenov, was on track to win more that 87 percent of the vote. Thousands of kilometers to the east, in Kaliningrad, regional election officials said acting governor and United Russia candidate Anton Alikhanov won 81 percent of the vote.

The election came six months before a March 2018 vote in which Putin, who has been president or prime minister for 18 years, is widely expected to seek -- and, given his popularity and control over the levers of power -- easily win news six-year term.

Putin, 64, would be barred from running again in 2024 because of a constitutional limit of two consecutive presidential terms.

Voter turnout in the September 10 elections was a "record low," the Russian newspaper Vedomosti reported.

Citing official figures, it said turnout exceeded 40 percent in only three regions -- Mordovia, Saratov, and Belgorod -- and was 12.7 percent in the Pacific coast city of Vladivostok.

Election commission officials, using data from two hours before the polls closed, said early on September 11 that about 15 percent of registered voters cast ballots in Moscow........................
