Angela Merkel is heading for a fourth term as Germany’s chancellor after exit polls following Sunday’s election pointed to a clear victory for her conservative Christian Democrat-led alliance.
In a result that will keep Ms Merkel at the heart of European affairs, the country’s 61m voters also gave unprecedented backing to her nationalist opponents — the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany, which will surge into the Bundestag after capitalising on widespread discontent over the refugee crisis.
Exit polls gave Ms Merkel’s CDU/CSU bloc 33 per cent of the vote. The Social Democrat party led by Martin Schulz appeared to have won a 21 per cent share, according to the polls.
