Russia - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 24 February. [Ukrainian sources] Empty Trump's line with Ukraine did not meet Russia's expectations, - the ambassador

Sat Feb 24, 2018 9:50 am
Trump's line with Ukraine did not meet Russia's expectations, - the ambassador

The United States's policy of sanctions against Russia, as well as the support of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, has only intensified under the current White House administration

Such a conviction was expressed by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Valery Chaly, reports Ukrinform.

"First of all, we have a clear and absolutely common position between the White House, ministries and departments, and the Congress on the continuation of the sanctions policy against Russia, which was initiated under the previous administration. The line of President Trump and the White House did not become softer, if in Russia it was expected," - said the diplomat.

The ambassador also stressed that the official Washington, including directly the President Donald Trump, has repeatedly stated support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

"I'm not talking about the State Department's standing statements with appeals to Russia to stop support for those who kill people and continue to stir up the conflict in Ukraine," Chalyi said.

He stressed that now the presence of Russians in the Donbass is already a fixed fact, and nobody says that they are there, "that is, everyone already knows the role of Russia in this conflict." And in this Ukraine has clear support for the United States.

In addition, Chaly noted that a number of mechanisms in Ukraine's interaction with the United States and other Western countries are working to force Russia to carry out "absolutely understandable things in accordance with international law."

Among such means, he called the increase of combat capability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as sanctions and assistance in reforms.

Manafort paid to European politicians for lobbying pro-Russian Ukrainian government

Russia - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 24 February. [Ukrainian sources] Censor_news_big3

FBI Special Prosecutor Robert Muller filed a new conviction that Paul Manaforth in 2012 secretly paid the former leading European politicians for lobbying the pro-Russian government of Ukraine.

As Censor.NET reports, AP reports.

It is noted that the indictment is based on testimonies of ex-assistant Manaforta Rick Gates.

Read on "Censor.NET": New allegations against Manaforte in the United States, "Reuters"

The FBI accused Manaforth of using offshore accounts to pay 2 million euros to former European politicians for lobbying the interests of the pro-Russian government of Ukraine.

It is reported that political figures, known as the "Habsburg Group", were considered independent analysts, although they were in fact paid lobbyists.

According to the publication, latent lobbying took place in the United States.

The indictment states that the group is headed by a former European Chancellor.

As you know, Paul Manathor's assistant, Rick Gates, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy at the federal level and false testimony.

On Friday afternoon, on February 23, two US Air Force reconnaissance aircraft conducted a comprehensive reconnaissance near the coast of Russia-occupied by Crimea

According to  Dumskaya, the patrol P-8A anti-submarine Poseidon flew about 10 am from the Sigonella airbase in Sicily and set off for the Black Sea.

Approximately at the same time, an EP-3E aircraft Aries II flew from Cyprus Air Base and also headed to the southern shore of the occupied peninsula.

Both planes spent about three hours in the sky over the Black Sea.

Russia - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 24 February. [Ukrainian sources] Empty Placing peacekeepers in the Donbass may not resolve the conflict, but freeze it - US ex-diplomats

Sat Feb 24, 2018 10:16 am
Placing peacekeepers in the Donbass may not resolve the conflict, but freeze it - US ex-diplomats

Former US diplomats warn that peacekeeping missions never resolve conflicts, but only freezes them.

The Wall Street Journal writes about it.

The publication notes that in some private conversations during the Munich Security Conference (including the issue of placement of UN peacekeepers in the Donbas), they expressed reservations that peacekeeping forces could consolidate Russia's control and not resolve the conflict.

However, supporters and skeptics believe that the United States needs to be careful in discussing this scenario.

"The Russian Federation may try to delay or impede the process of transitioning the Ukrainian-Russian border to the control of peacekeeping forces. Risks can be mitigated if the proposal includes some mitigation of sanctions until a complete restoration of peace in Ukraine", - the newspaper quotes the assumption of American officials.

The former US ambassador to Russia, Michael McPhole, reminded that peacekeeping forces in Cyprus were stationed in 1864, but the country remains divided.

"These forces are still there, and the conclusion of a peace agreement that would unite Turkey-occupied north of the island with the rest of the country remains foggy. Explain what the factors in this particular case are, so that it does not lead to a scenario like a permanent division, as in Cyprus, "said McFaul in Munich, US State Department spokesman Kurt Walker.

Volker himself believes that a peacekeeping mission can be effective if both Russians and Ukrainians want peace and that this is the best way to implement the Minsk Agreements.

Ukrainian officials in Munich said the newspaper did not doubt the American plan, but did not believe that the RF would agree with it.

Current US diplomats are convinced that more opportunities will be opened between the end of the presidential election in Russia (scheduled for March 18, 2018) and the start of the World Cup in Russia this year.

"The plan with peacekeepers will work only if Vladimir Putin wants to get rid of Western sanctions," says former Deputy Secretary General of NATO Alexander Vershbow.

Russia will not go easily with Donbas - Hodges

Russia - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 24 February. [Ukrainian sources] Censor_news_big3

The Russian Federation invested too much in the Donbas War to just go.

This was said by former US forces commander in Europe (2014-2017) Ben Hodges in an interview with The New Time,  according to  Tsensor.NET.

"I think that in the end the decision should be not military but political, but at the same time diplomatic efforts usually take a long time." Russia has invested too much in this war and therefore will not leave the territory of Donbas quickly and easily. I think it will be a long process"- said Hodges.

The general does not think that there is a direct connection between the presidential elections in Russia and the end of the war in the Donbas.

The level of impunity in Ukraine continues to grow. Amnesty International Report

Russia - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 24 February. [Ukrainian sources] 94_main

Human rights activists say: the lives of people in the territories occupied by Russia are becoming more and more difficult.

Social tension in Ukraine continues to grow. This is the main conclusion of the Amnesty International Ukraine report for 2017, released today. "The accumulation of economic problems, the slow pace of reforms and ongoing corruption have always provoked protests in Kiev, which at times turned into violence," the report said.

Human rights activists also state that the lives of people in the territories occupied by Russia are becoming more and more difficult. "The increase in poverty and unemployment, multiplied by record high food prices, has negatively affected the lives of 3.8 million people in the conflict zone in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts ," the report said. In addition, experts from Amnesty International state that Russia restricts access to international human rights defenders in the occupied Crimea.

In addition, experts from Amnesty International state that Russia restricts access to international human rights defenders in the occupied Crimea.

The insult of the invaders in the Crimea

The verdict of human rights activists is clear: the situation with human rights in the occupied Crimea has deteriorated. "The most dissatisfied representatives of the Crimean Tatar people suffer the most," said Oksana Pokalchuk, director of Amnesty International Ukraine.

At the end of 2016, the organization carried out a mission to Crimea, which resulted in the publication of a report with the eloquent title "Crimea in the dark". According to Pokalchuk, even then human rights activists began to follow the case of the Crimean-Tatar activist, human rights activist Emir-Oussein Kuku - to track the course of the "investigation" of the fabricated case. "He was beaten several times, there were attempts to steal him. True, then the Crimean "authorities" did not call it a kidnapping, but a "form of detention". Homosexuals actually repeatedly repulsed him (from "law enforcement officers" - " Glavkom")", - said a human rights defender.

Russia - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 24 February. [Ukrainian sources] 1_522

According to Pokalchuk, after a series of kidnappings, an FSB employee came to Emir to his home and offered to cooperate, become a contributor. Human rights defender refused. Soon after, he was arrested, after which the same fsshshik visited a school where 9 year old son Emir Bekir taught and told the child: "If your father does not cooperate with us, we will be imprisoned for him because he is a terrorist." The wife of Emir, trying to protect the child from similar visitors, turned to the police... "Law enforcers" reacted lightningly: they began the process... depriving a woman of parental rights! "The process stopped after a hurricane that came to a close this," added Pokalchuk.

Director of Amnesty International Ukraine noted that in the context of the case of Emir Usayn, the organization began to track another case - the Hizb ut-Tahrir movement (the Yalta Six, as the detained members of the movement called "Glavkom").

Pokalchuk pointed out a series of shouting violations not only of human rights, but also of the norms of international law that Russia allowed. Yes, Hizb ut-Tahrir is banned in Russia, but not forbidden in Ukraine. "After the annexation on the annexed territory, the legislation of the country occupying the territory should be kept. Violating humanitarian law, the RF judges people according to their laws", - said a human rights defender.

After which six members of the movement were detained in the Crimea , they were taken to Rostov, where they are currently being prosecuted. "According to the norms of international humanitarian law, people can not be removed from the occupied territory. This is another violation, as the trial of the Crimeans is taking place in Rostov, "he said, adding that the" Yalta six "were judged by the military court," and this is also a gross violation."

Director of Amnesty International Ukraine said that he traveled to Rostov last week together with other human rights activists to a court session on the Hizb ut-Tahrir movement. She was able to listen to the testimony of the same fbsshhnik, who fabricated the case. As you know, the members of the organization are accused of two articles: participation in a terrorist organization and an attempt to revolutionize. "The first one is a complete nonsense. The second is an interesting story. Fsbshnik could not even say exactly how these men who had no weapons, money that were not related to each other, could try to overthrow power. He could not even accurately say where they acted: whether in the Crimea, or in the Russian Federation. Finally, with tips from the prosecutors, he agreed, they say, let this attempt of a coup be carried out in the Crimea. He could not provide evidence either - he relied on unknown witnesses of unknown witnesses", said Pokalchuk. At present, pressure is on his wife and son of Emir.

The human rights defender emphasized: such cases, when dissidents "turn" terrorists, in the occupied Crimea a lot.

Torture of law enforcers

"Representatives of law enforcement bodies continue to resort to torture, other forms of ill-treatment and violate human rights. Previous violations of international humanitarian law remained unpunished, "Amnesty International Ukraine reports.

The report also mentions one of the shouting cases. "On August 15, the SBU was arrested and detained for two days without access to the outside world, a Ukrainian citizen residing in Russia and visiting her mother in Ukraine. She was accused of treason and illegal possession of weapons. Photos of a woman made by her lawyer outside the court hall show signs of beatings and possible torture by SBU employees, "said human rights activists.

Russia - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 24 February. [Ukrainian sources] 2_388
In addition, the lawyer Mastikasheva reported that Daria was threatening her mother and son until she could read aloud the camera, in which she was charged with crimes. By the end of the year, she was in custody awaiting trial....

The Russian Foreign Ministry reacted to the entry into force of the Donbas law: "We hope that the Western curators of Ukraine are aware"

Russia - Ukraine News in brief. Saturday 24 February. [Ukrainian sources] Censor_news_big3

The law, which entered into force on Saturday, February 24, the law "On the peculiarities of state policy towards ensuring the state sovereignty of Ukraine in temporarily occupied territories in the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts" creates conditions for violent seizure by Ukraine of uncontrolled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.

As Tsensor.NET reports, this is stated in a  statement by the  Russian Foreign Ministry, published on the official website of the Ministry.

"By signing the law, Poroshenko actually denied" Minsk treaties "by unleashing the hands of the" party of war. "There is no question of any direct dialogue with the authorities of unrecognized republics, the de-escalation of the confrontation and the search for a peaceful political settlement. On the contrary, the document creates conditions for the forcible seizure of uncontrolled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, legalizes the use of the Ukrainian army against the civilian population", - the statement reads.

The report said that the practical application of this law threatens the risks of a serious escalation of the conflict in the south-east of Ukraine.

"We hope that its Western curators realize this and will be able to use their existing influence on Kyiv in order to prevent the implementation of a scenario that is detrimental to Ukraine's state, which threatens unpredictable consequences for European stability and security," - said in a statement.

Recall Draft Law No. 7163 "On the Peculiarities of State Policy Regarding the Provision of State Sovereignty of Ukraine over Temporarily Occupied Territories in Donetsk and Lugansk Oblasts" was introduced by President Poroshenko on October 4.

On October 5, the National Security Committee of the Verkhovna Rada approved the bill No. 7163 "On the peculiarities of state policy towards ensuring the state sovereignty of Ukraine over temporarily occupied territories in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts", recommending it for adoption in the first reading.

On October 6, the Verkhovna Rada approved the presidential bill in the first reading.

For the adoption of the presidential version of the draft law on the de-occupation of the Donbas, 114 members of the faction "BPP", 71 People's Deputy from the NF, 17 People's Deputies from the Radical Party, 12 People's Deputies from the "Will of the People" and 19 non-factional deputies voted for the vote.

No votes in support of this bill were given by the factions "Batkivshchyna", "Opoplubok", "Self-help" and groups "Will of the people".

The bill should create a new legal basis for solving the problem of displaying hostile aggression in the Donbas, and in the long term - to restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine within an internationally recognized border.

General Electric $1billion worth agreement will lead to modernization of Ukraine’s railroads, - Poroshenko

Ukraine’s state-run railroad operator struck a major deal with U.S. General Electric.
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko is confident that the country’s economy develops rapidly, Censor.NET reports citing his statement on social media.

"The agreement between Ukrzaliznytsia and General Electric worth $1 billion will lead to modernization and development of the railroads. But the most important thing is that the conclusion of the framework agreement will guarantee the long-term mutually beneficial cooperation between Kyiv and Washington.

"This is one of the signals showing that Ukraine is moving forward. This is a convincing proof that we are back on the track of economic growth, that we are starting to modernize the infrastructure, that Ukraine is a reliable partner. This is the largest deal in many years," the president said in a statement.

"I promise you honestly I will serve Donbass": in kindergartens of the Russian Federation read "patriotic" poems on February 23. VIDEO

The network featured videos of children's performances in several Russian nurseries on the occasion of the celebration of the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland on February 23.

It was published by journalist Alexander Tversky on his Facebook page, reports Tsensor.NET.

As can be seen from the video, one of the participants of the celebration read a poem that when you grow up, go to serve on the Donbas.

In particular, in this verse there are the following lines: "From the earliest years, guys, I want to be a soldier. I promise you that I will serve honestly Donbass."

In another part of the video, the children performed the song "We will only slightly grow up, we will go to the Russian army".

Journalist Alexander Tversky commented on this video as follows: "Growing in the patriotic generation, blurred on the war, on the thoughtless execution of criminal orders, on a lot of local wars and perhaps on another big one."

Note that the author does not specify in which cities the appropriate measures took place.

Kadyrov was banned from entering Latvia

Latvia has banned entry into the country to President Ramzan Kadyrov of Chechnya.

This was announced on Twitter by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgar Rinkevich.

It is noted that now 49 people who appear in the American "List of Magnitsky" can not enter the territory of the Republic of Latvia.

The entry into the country was banned by the Speaker of the Chechen parliament, Magomed Daudov, the Deputy Minister of the Interior of the Republic Apti Alaudinov, the ex-assistant of the head of the republic Umar Sahaipov and the native of Chechnya, Kazbek Dukuzov, who is suspected of murdering journalist Paul Khlebnikov.

The "List of Magnitsky" contains a list of Russian officials involved in the violation of human rights, fraud and death of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.

Officials were banned from entering the US and imposing economic sanctions on them. The relevant law was subsequently adopted by the European Parliament, Switzerland and Canada. In response to sanctions Kadyrov has banned entry into Chechnya by five US and European Union representatives.

Recall that the US Department of the Treasury has introduced Ramzan Kadyrov, head of Chechnya, to the "Magnitsky List" . He is considered "responsible for extrajudicial executions, torture and other serious violations of human rights."
