Google transmitted US GPS data to the US police

on Mon Mar 19, 2018 4:38 pm
Police in Raleigh in North Carolina have announced a partnership with Google. The findings, according to the investigators, helped to expose the crimes more quickly.

This was reported by Tech Crunch.

According to the police, in one case, the company showed all the smartphones that were located next to the place of the event, but did not disclose personal data of users. In another case, she pointed out devices that had fallen into an area of 68 square kilometers at the time of the murder.

Most modern phones, tablets, and laptops have GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile communications, so the location of the device can be easily identified if it is connected to one of these networks.

Requests for data began to come to Google several years ago. Employees of the company said that they receive orders to disclose data about 80 thousand users every six months.

The latest open data reporting, dated January 2017, says that information was disclosed in 65% of cases.

Law enforcers noted that Google provided data not only about smartphones on the Android operating system, but also about devices that have installed its software that uses geolocation.

A company spokesman commented on the police statement: "We have long discovered how enforcement agencies can request user data. We handle each request thoroughly and reject any incidents that violate privacy."

Recall that on March 14, Google decided to ban online advertising that disseminates information on crypto-currency, and offers appropriate investment.
