World Cup uncertainty for Qatar and Russia grows as Blatter accuses Paris and Berlin

Post by Admin on Sun Jul 05, 2015 2:11 pm

FIFA President Sepp Blatter claims France and Germany intervened in bids for 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Blatter alleges former French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his German counterpart Christian Wulff pressured FIFA before the two tournament hosts were announced in December 2010.

Russia got the 2018 World Cup, while Qatar got the 2022 tournament, with the voting process for both events being embroiled in allegations of corruption.

US and Swiss authorities are currently investigating the bidding process around the two tournaments.

Speaking to Germany's Welt am Sonntag newspaper, Blatter said: "Before the World Cups were awarded to Russia and Qatar, there were two political interventions. Messrs Sarkozy and Wulff tried to influence their vote-makers. That is the reason why we now have a World Cup in Qatar. Those who decided this should also take the responsibility."

FIFA's head of audit and compliance last month said it was feasible for FIFA to strip a nation of the World Cup if corruption was proved.

Officials in Britain say the country would be able to step in at short notice to host the event in case Russia and Qatar are found guilty of corruption.
