News -
Update at midday - В зоні АТО обійшлося без загиблих, 2 поранено
No dead, 2 injured in ATO area. Perhaps the lowest figure for months.
Perhaps Putin has told the Russians to stop killing around the MH17 anniversary?

Admin sent me to Kiev this morning to check out the situation there.
The first thing I noticed - several checkpoints outside the city with Pravi Sector flags. And men in masks.
No problems. Frankly, it makes me feel safer.
I met a worker for Batkivshina. He has met Tymoshenko. Knowledgeable about politics. We had a good chat.
Mukachevo - he said not just cigarette smuggling, but that the whole area around there was involved in smuggling.
Cigarettes, alcohol, electronic goods, but also drugs coming in the otherway, for example from Amsterdam to Ukraine.
Western news on Ukraine dominated by the anniversary of MH17.
Not a bad report in the Telegraph, but... but... that idiot Roland Oliphant adds his own commentary, trying to make out a case that all is unclear.
There is nothing unclear. Putin shot down the plane with a missile system from Russia.
But Oliphant, just like Shaun Walker, has lived in Russia for well over a decade.
He values his residency document far more than telling the truth to the readers of his paper.
Scumball.
You will recall that Oliphant was the scumball who advised idiot editor David Blair of the Telegraph to write that Ukraine was being "heavy handed" in its war against Putin's 5000 tanks. Too many British scumball journalists living cushy lives in Moscow. And being "economical with the truth" for a (allegedly) payback from their ultimate boss, Mr Putin and the Kremlin machine.

Weather -
Humid. Kiev - clouding over as I left. But warm. 26. Some sunshine.

MH17 - Ukraine crisis. News in Brief. Friday 17 July [Ukrainian sources] - Page 2 Empty In Georgia, the call to ban the broadcasting of Russian state TV channels

Fri Jul 17, 2015 10:26 pm
Chairman of the Georgian National Platform of Civil Society Forum of the Eastern Partnership, Lasha Tugushi has initiated the prohibition of Russian state TV channels in Georgia. At the press conference, Lasha Tugushi said that these channels are poisoning the population of Georgia.

According to him, the strategic documents developed by the state, are a great luxury for Georgia.

"We have, for example, is not defined what we are doing with the Russian channels that poison our population. This, unfortunately, cable television make money. We are looking at a very simple, easy, and see how increase pro-Russian sentiment in Georgia as a result of this poison. The machine, which works very effectively, affect mood, people's attitudes, including the conflict. Often highly developed countries accept such pressure as a problematic, they spend huge money in the opposite direction. Russia is spending billions on propaganda, and we oppose it, we have no leverage for it "- said Tugushi.

According to him, the Russian state channels should either be limited by legal means or directly from them need to be abandoned.

"These channels should be limited by legal means, because they are propaganda for war, engendered hatred. Then, when our channels under our laws are vulnerable in respect of the Russian channels, we have no leverage. There is a legal way to enter them into your space, use appropriate sanctions to them, and such instruments have to date not. Another way to directly abandon these channels, at least, to have refused to cable channels. I do not know how to do it. At least, if you know what to sell poison, it does not have to sell it. It is a moral issue. I personally, as a citizen, I call to review these relations. Perhaps someone will say that this is not a democracy, and democracy is pluralism, but pluralism of what we say, when not dealing with the media. Russian state channels are not a means of media, they are the channel, where our country goes poison, so I do not think there should be a standard Democratic talking rhetoric. Moreover, when a large part of Georgian territory is occupied and we are with this country, in fact, martial law, "- said Tugushi.

According to him, Georgia has to look at the actions of other countries, such as Lithuania, which to remove these channels from their information space, as these are limited to television in Ukraine.

MH17 - Ukraine crisis. News in Brief. Friday 17 July [Ukrainian sources] - Page 2 Empty Ukraine Opening Its Energy Market To The U.S. (forbes)

Fri Jul 17, 2015 10:39 pm
Wellp, it was inevitable, right? The U.S. is making inroads into Ukraine’s energy sector, judging by talks this week in Washington.

Representatives from Ukrainian natural gas company Naftogaz participated in the first U.S.-Ukrainian Business Forum on Monday. Andriy Kobolyev, Naftogaz’s CEO, met with U.S. business leaders, government officials and international financial institutions to discuss Ukraine’s natural gas market and the prospects for future investment.

Naftogaz has long been a partner of Russian state controlled behemoth Gazprom. But the two are going through a bitter divorce. The two countries have been locking horns for over a year and a half now, putting the U.S. and E.U. in the middle as peace brokers. While Gazprom has been a partner with Naftogaz for years, replacing it with someone else in Ukraine, or elsewhere, is probably high on its radar. Gazprom and Naftogaz are currently in pay disputes being brokered by the E.U. The two sides can barely talk to each other without a European intermediary.

The rift has created opportunities for U.S. energy companies looking to get into the lucrative European market.

Some of the reforms in the works in Ukraine that bode well for American firms include:

1. Elimination of intermediaries in gas trade, previously the primary source of corruption in Ukraine’s gas sector;
2. Strengthening the country’s energy security through diversification of gas imports away from Russia;
3. Initiation of the liberalization of domestic prices for natural gas, which paves the way to new projects in energy efficiency and increasing domestic gas production;
4. Development of a new corporate governance strategy at Naftogaz; and lastly…
5. Adoption of Ukraine’s new Gas Market Law, which is fully compliant with the E.U. Third Energy Package and makes the Ukrainian gas market more transparent....................
