John McCain: Putin's Russia will threaten Europe until real opposition found

Post by Admin on Thu Jul 23, 2015 7:28 pm

The Republican politician made the remarks during a discussion on national security challenges at the Hudson Institute in Washington D.C, where topics including Russia, Islamic State and tensions in the South China Sea were on the agenda.

John McCain, US Senator: "I think what Putin does now is that he sorts of calibrates about how far he can go without triggering some kind of real opposition. We are arguing now over when and how to raise the sanctions. Nobody talks about Crimea, nobody talks about the Malaysia Airliner that we know was shot down with Russian equipment and probably with Russian(s) manning it. There's no discussion of it"

McCain went onto voice concerns about NATO's ability to protect the Baltic states, in case of any Russian invasion.

John McCain, US Senator: "Does anybody here believe that NATO would then… (remember there can only be one dissenting vote and it doesn't happen)…that NATO would agree to act militarily. I don't think so…. "They are reflective on their governments, governments with this dependency on Russian energy and their continued reductions in defence spending".

McCain also urged Europe to put more effort into stopping Russian money in the banking system, being used to buy political influence.
