A referendum on Britain's membership in the EU will be held not earlier than in autumn 2016

UK Cabinet ruled out the possibility of holding a referendum on the country's membership in the European Union in May 2016.

The government explained that the decision taken at the request of the Parliament about the possible coincidence plebiscite election of the mayor of London and members of legislative bodies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

At the same time before it became known that the referendum will take place no earlier than 2016. In the UK such plebiscites traditionally held in May or September.

Thus, a referendum on Britain's membership in the European Union will be held until next September.

The decision to hold a referendum was made last week by the British Parliament. The plebiscite must pass before the end of 2017. The government explained that since the country's accession to the EU structure and nature of the Union have undergone significant changes.
