Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Wednesday 18 November [Ukrainian sources] Empty Ukraine qualify for the Euro finals in Paris next summer

Wed Nov 18, 2015 12:30 am
Slovenia 1 - Ukraine 1  First leg was Ukraine 2 - Slovenia 0
But the score doesn't tell the story. Slovenia scored after just 11 minutes. And needed just one more goal to take the game to extra time and penalties.
But they didn't get it. The last 15 minutes was awful from the spectator point of view. Pressure from Slovenia. 5 minutes extra time.
But - the referee played 7 minutes. And in the dying seconds the Ukrainians broke away - actually a Slovenian defender slipped - and they scored the killer goal.
And the referee blew the final whistle apparently. We never saw that on the tv! Also he issued a red card on about 85 minutes, to a Slovenian player. In the final phase of the game, a lot of needle, clashes. Conflict. Unlike the first game.
So - Ukraine qualified for the Euro finals for the first time.
Obviously they played in 2012, but that was because they were the hosts.
Will Uefa keep Russia and Ukraine apart in the draw? I would think so.

Good write up on the Uefa website.

Observation - Ukraine was the only team playing away in the 2nd leg to qualify. Draw for finals - 12 December.

The roads in Ukraine are incredibly dangerous. And little is done to improve safety.
Part of the problem. The police simply take bribes, and people are not prosecuted.
The normal daily figure I think is around 8 or 10 deaths a day. So 18 is high.

"One more step forward: today the Greek parliament has ratified the bill on the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU. Thank you!" Klimkin tweeted.
This leaves Cyprus as the only EU country left which has not ratified the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.

Good that Greece has done this. I was worried that Putin would block it.
But I thought Cyprus ratified it a couple of weeks' ago? Must have been wrong.

Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Wednesday 18 November [Ukrainian sources] Empty Russia to ban food imports from Ukraine from January 1: TASS [Engl]

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in August that Moscow would ban food imports from Ukraine from 2016 if an economic association agreement between Kiev and the European Union came into force.
====
That will put inflation up further in Russia. Ukraine will have to find new markets in the EU.
I've read else where that this will cost Ukraine about 600 million usd in lost revenue.
Chinese market also... ?

Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Wednesday 18 November [Ukrainian sources] Empty Ex-Interior Minister Zakharchenko and his circle organized titushkas, - PGO

Wed Nov 18, 2015 2:11 pm
The coordination of titushkas [hooligans paid by Yanukovych's regime to oppose Maidan protesters - ed.] was laid on then Interior Minister of Ukraine Vitalii Zakharchenko, as the investigation suggests.

"The coordination was centered on ex-minister Zakharchenko and his team which was involved in the coordination, selection, and financing of those titushkas and their leaders. It was all done with the knowledge and at the direction of Viktor Yanukovych, as set out in the notice of suspicion," Serhii Horbatiuk, the head of PGO's special investigation department, said at a press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

"Titushkas' actions were not spontaneous but well-coordinated," he stressed.

Yanukovych personally ordered Kliuiev and Zakharchenko to crack Maidan activists down, - PGO

Horbatiuk says it has been established that Zakharchenko's people, who have been served notices of suspicion, picked people from different regions of Ukraine, who, in turn, "picked fighters for other tasks," UNIAN reports.

"It was a large number of "guests" from Kharkiv (Oplot gang led by Zhylin), from Kyiv, headed by semi-criminal elements from Zhytomyr, Bila Tserkva, Nizhyn, and other regions," he said.

Tetiana Chornovol's beating during Maidan was organized by crime boss 'Netrik,' National Police says

According to Horbatiuk, it has also been established that "titushkas were given police equipment, shields, stun grenades, batons, which they used during the protests."

Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Wednesday 18 November [Ukrainian sources] Empty Putin selling himself to West in exchange for Ukraine - Piontkovsky

Wed Nov 18, 2015 2:15 pm
“After the Paris massacre, the Russian propaganda has launched an unprecedented and cynical campaign urging the West ‘to bury the hatchet regarding Ukraine in the face of a common deadly enemy (ISIS) threatening the existence of all the countries,” Russian analyst Andrei Piontkovsky says.

Putin has resumed his attempts to sell himself to the West as vital ally in the fight with ISIS, expecting in exchange a mandate to run the post-Soviet space, the expert says in his article for Apostrof Nov. 18.

Despite Putin’s expectations, the sell-out of Ukraine in exchange for Putin’s role in the anti-ISIS coalition (the same as Eastern Europe was sacrificed to Stalin in 1939) will remain just Putin’s dreams.

During their brief encounter in Turkey, Obama reminded the Russian dictator that the Minsk agreements, and especially the withdrawal of the Russian troops from Donbas, are to be implemented in full.

“Still, the hubbub of Putin’s agents in the West that the international community badly needs Russia to fight the terrorism will continue and pick up,” Andrei Piontkovsky says.

Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Wednesday 18 November [Ukrainian sources] Empty Russia deploys hi-end stealth battleships to Crimea

Wed Nov 18, 2015 6:03 pm
Serpukhov and Green Dol light battleships, the newest entries to the Black Sea Fleet, entered the occupied Crimea’s Sevastopol harbor today, according to Viacheslav Trubachev, press officer of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper reported.

"Yesterday the light battleships successfully passed tests in Novorossiysk and made it to their permanent base in 24 hours," he said.

According to him, the two new light battleships joining the Black Fleet is a significant event, as the Fleet had received no vessels of this class since 2002, when the Samum missile hovercraft of Russia’s Baltic Fleet was deployed in Sevastopol.

In addition, the hull design reduces return making it harder to tell these fast and maneuverable battleships from fishing boats or large yachts.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Black Sea Fleet’s naval aviation in 2016 will receive a new batch of multifunctional Su-30SM multifunctional fighterjets to replace Su24 frontline bombers.

Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Wednesday 18 November [Ukrainian sources] Empty Alksnis: Antalya Putin in a very harsh manner ultimatum for surrender of Donbass and return Crimea to Ukraine

Wed Nov 18, 2015 8:10 pm
Well-known Russian politician, former MP of the USSR and the Russian State Duma Victor Alksnis confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting "Twenty" filed tough ultimatum to return the occupied part of Ukraine, Donbass and Crimea.

This Alksnis wrote on his page on Facebook.

"A few days ago accidentally met with one his old friends, who until recently worked selflessly in the Old Square. We talked about that, about this, including politics. He mentioned that the alleged in a recent meeting of "twenty" in Antalya Vladimir Putin was given an ultimatum, the meaning of which is as follows - surrender of Donbass and return Crimea to Ukraine.

And an ultimatum was presented in a very harsh manner. So we will see whether there is enough of our leaders have the political will?

If delivery of the Donbass threatens Putin just reputational losses, then the Crimea is much more serious. After all, according to the Constitution of the Russian Federation, he is a subject of the Russian Federation, and therefore, the transfer of the territory of the Russian foreign state can already be seen from the position of high treason "- wrote Alksnis.
