The article further into it states "Russia has been always interested in "mutual understanding between Shiites and Sunnis and the unity of the Muslims world."
For starters, Iran's not a friend of the west and even more against the US. And lately, there have been spats back and forth between the US and the Saudis. That alone should show what the real agenda behind a meeting between them, knowing that the US in now the #1 oil producer, including gas and soon LNG. The picture's getting clearer. The US is now both there enemy. They were both big at one point, till the sanctions against Iran were placed by the US. And Russia's now hurting on oil and gas income. Of course, caused by the US smart strategy.
So this has nothing to do with the Shiite and Sunnis. Good try though.
