A Pentagon spokeswoman, Eric Pehon, said that about 3,000 Islamists remain in Syria and Iraq, despite statements by Russia that the Islamic State (IDIL) terrorist groups are missing from the Syrian territory. He added that Russia has not made much progress in combating terrorism in the region.
This is reported by Radio Liberty.
Recall yesterday, December 7, the Chief of General Staff of Russia, General Valery Gerasimov said that all IDIL units in Syria were destroyed, and the territory itself was allegedly released. This statement sounded after the Syrian government troops with the support of the Russian aviation beat the jihadists from a number of settlements in the province of Deir-ez-Zor.
Russia's statement was also denied in the Conflict Intelligence Team, which monitors the situation in Syria. Experts say a number of Islamist groups continue to operate in some provinces of Syria.
