Meanwhile, Turkish Defense Minister Nurettin Janicki said that his military operation in the region actually began with shelling, but their troops had not yet entered the city of Afrin.

It is noted that direct military action against the territory under the control of the Kurds will open a new front within the framework of the civil war in Syria.

In the meantime, the US Department of State has called on Turkey to focus on the fight against terrorists of the "Islamic State" rather than launching hostilities in Afrin.

Erdogan said on January 14 that the Turkish army could begin a military operation in the northwest of Syria in weeks.
