The United States Embassy in Ukraine has called on Russia to withdraw its troops from Georgia.

The embassy posted an appropriate message on Twitter.

The diplomatic mission notes that Russia should withdraw its military forces to the pre-war positions, as agreed in 2008.

"Today marks the 10th anniversary of Russia's armed forces flowing across the international border with Georgia, trying to force it to change it. The territories of Georgia are still occupied by Russia. We again call on Russia to withdraw its forces in the pre-war positions, as agreed in 2008, "the statement said.

During August 8-12, 2008, an armed conflict with the participation of Russia and Georgia took place on the territory of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

According to the Russian side, troops arrived in the region to protect citizens.

On the night of August 8, the Georgian government launched heavy artillery, trying to establish control over South Ossetia and expelled the Russian contingent from a conflict region.

Fights lasted for 5 days, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people on both sides.

After five days of war, Russia recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states, and diplomatic relations between Moscow and Tbilisi were terminated.

On July 30, the European Union said that Syria's decision to recognize the independence of self-proclaimed Abkhazia and South Ossetia violated international law and the principle of territorial integrity.

Recall that on May 29, the so-called Foreign Minister of the unrecognized Abkhazia reported that Syria recognized the independence of Russia's occupied territories of Georgia - Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Georgia has announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with Syria through recognition of the independence of the occupied territories.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo promised more in-depth security and economic support to Georgia, and called on Russia to withdraw its troops from the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Recall, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine opposed the entry of separate units of the armed forces of self-proclaimed South Ossetia into the Russian armed forces, as previously stated in the Russian Federation.

On January 24, the State Duma of Russia ratified an agreement on "the procedure for the entry of certain units of the South Ossetian armed forces into the armed forces of Russia."

South Ossetia is an uncontrolled Tbilisi region in Georgia, and in 2008 control over it with the support of Russia passed to militants.

Earlier it was reported that in South Ossetia Georgian schools were transferred to the Russian language of instruction.
