News -
Putin striking 67 times yesterday at the Ukrainian forces, and its people.
Very similar to Wednesday's total, but then we heard that 4 young men had died on the front line.
Clashes down on the 150+ totals of almost a week ago.
UPDATE - 1230 briefing. Saying no soldiers killed yesterday, 2 injured. Basically, good news.

Oil price - 41 / 46. Less money for Putin's war machine.
Ruble now at 68 this morning. Falling and falling. Problems for Putin.
But is there a Russian journalist with the guts to ask if it is time for him to go? Answer - no.

Weather -
Cool again today, but the forecast is that it will warm up for the weekend. Sunshine and clouds.
Hopefully the rain will hold off for Independence Day. Temperature for the weekend forecast to be in the mid 20s.
Today - only 21.

Footie -
Zarya Lugansk lost in Kiev against Legia Warsawa. 0-1. I watched the first half hour. Good game.
But I expect the Polish team to go through after their home leg. Some clashes before the match in Kiev, Lviv.

He added that there was a need to increase the export volume of production of the processing enterprises.

The leaders of the so-called Donetsk republic ordered to give away to local residents 1 million cans of expired meat sent recently by Russia, Oborona Mariupola NGO says on its page in Facebook Aug. 21.

Rebel authorities plan to distribute the meat via social canteens and humanitarian assistance programs.

Meanwhile, experts warn that due to the expiry of the term during which the meat can be consumed the population can be exposed to mass poisonings.
As fighting flares with no end in sight, Kyiv makes its casualties public, while Russian military deaths in ‘peacetime’ are officially a state secret.

From the Daily Beast, Aug 19, 2015

MOSCOW — Violence in eastern Ukraine is boiling over. The entire front line in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions known as Donbas is on fire with both enemies, Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed army, blaming one another for shelling populated areas with Grad rocket launch systems, killing civilians on both sides. Kyiv, Moscow, and the Donetsk leaders are warning each other of even worse escalations, even more violence, despite the ceasefire agreement reached at Minsk last February.

But as the Ukrainian people learned of the casualties on their side, the Russians are kept in the dark about the dead among their forces.

Ukrainian Minister of Defense Sergei Galushko blamed Moscow for new attacks in an effort to spoil Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations on August 24. “The Russian leadership is surprised that Ukraine remains independent, with public support for the anti-terrorist operation, so Russia will try to prevent our holiday,” Galushko said.

Hundreds of soldiers are dying on both sides in the war that started in April last year and never seems close to ending. Kyiv reported around 1,800 military were killed in Donbas; the Russian non-governmental organization Union of Committees of Soldiers’ Mothers believed that at least half of the rebel losses, 900 militants, were Russian professional military. And there is a dramatic difference between how Russian and Ukrainian families treated their lost sons in the conflict.

If Ukraine buries its military as heroes with crowds saying goodbye to each dead soldier, and the media covering the funerals, Russia stays quiet about its sons dying in Ukraine.

“It’s as if my people had been swapped with some strangers,” the head of Soldiers’ Mothers, Valentina Melnikova, told The Daily Beast on Tuesday. “I am amazed to see how scared military families are to protest against their sons being sent to Ukraine. Parents of killed soldiers, 40- and 50-year-old people, are scared to death to protest. Of what If it’s to lose their jobs, this is ridiculous, they have lost their children.”

Last May President Putin officially declared military deaths in peacetime a state secret. His decision was seen as an attempt to cover up the Kremlin’s role in the Ukraine war...................

Rubles to one dollar //  euro //   pound
Inverse: 68.1993 76.8947 106.962

The oil price and ruble seem to have steadied.
I would think that the Russian central bank has intervened also.
Basically at 68 / dollar, 77 / euro, and 107 / pound. Amazing.

The ruble is now worth less than 1p in British money.
If you saw a ruble on the floor you probably wouldn't even bother bending down to pick it up.

За прошедшие сутки в зоне АТО двое украинских военных получили ранения, погибших нет - АП
Good news.

Now - hold on... He is the self proclaimed ruler of his Lugansk Republic, supported by dictator Putin.
But - he expects Ukraine to pay the pension there? Why? Is it the Lugansk Republic, or not?
"The peculiarity of this humanitarian convoy was that most of the trucks were loaded with only half ..."
Presume room for adding weapons, ammunition, shells, missiles.

Also, I saw on the tv news yesterday - another Putin convoy is on the way.
Last time round there was a massive increase in the amount of shelling and use of Grad the day after it arrived in the Donbas.
I met up with somebody else yesterday from Volnovakha. He confirmed that there is a massive operation going on there smuggling everything across the frontline to the terrorists. Food, alcohol, even guns! Yes... guns. An Ukrainian soldier fills in a form that his gun has been destroyed in an attack. But it hasn't, and he sells it to the separatists. Hard to believe, but true. Posted separately, the Border Guards collect 60,000 hryvnia each day from illegal crossings. And this just at Volnovakha.
My contact even had a new expensive planchet - tablet, and his young son has the same.. And what else he has bought, I have no idea. Lots and lots of money suddenly for those in the ATO zone.

[Russian source.
The Russian press in the past few days have really been pushing the story that Ukraine is building up resources, ready for a major offensive.
One would assume the opposite is true. This was always the case with Soviet propaganda. I assume little has changed. ]

It is planned that at the first stage, the passage will be able to let through 3 pairs of trains per day, and later the number can be increased to 7 pairs of trains and more," the company’s press service said.
The Nikitovka-Mayorskaya passage is the only operating station for delivering coal from Donbas to Kiev.

[Note - Tass - Russian news source.
If true, then Ukraine is paying the separatists for coal? ]

I must admit that I am shocked.
Some strange things going on today. The Greek PM resigns after all the chaos he caused in the currency markets.
And today the euro is stronger. I thought it would have gone in the other direction...

The ruble though... looks like the Russian Central Bank are doing very very little to stabilise it, and speculators are realizing this, and ..
it seems to be in a steady controlled free-fall. 63 to 68 in a few days... A devaluation nearing 10%.
That means higher inflation down the line for Russia.

Natural Gas (Nymex)

All figures in the red this morning, as I look. Which means all prices are still falling.
I was expecting some people to start buying, but it looks as if the traders expect the price to fall further.
Gas has been more stable. But is basically linked to the oil price. Which is why Ukraine's gas bill should fall a lot this winter.
Another mild winter would help, of course.
The revised Russian budget allowed for an oil price of 50 dollars a barrel.
Urals oil must be trading near 43 now. Over 10% down again. And that inbalance will surely come from the Reserve Fund.
And that is moving fairly rapidly now towards zero. And then what for Putin? I don't think he has any idea...
[First and last paragraphs - ]
Even while senior officials try to comfort television viewers by claiming that the Russian economy has already hit bottom and is moving toward recovery, the rolling captions at the bottom of the screen that show the ruble's continuing decline tell a very different story....
The Russian people have no idea toward which port the ship of state is sailing, much less whether it is a worthwhile destination. This is a fairly typical situation for the so-called "post-Soviet period of transition" — a condition in which both the point of origin and the ultimate destination remain obscure.
abnormally high number of Google searches for terms like “Right Sector,” .. did not come from high population centers such as Moscow but turned up in Olgino, a St. Petersburg suburb.
...the innocuously-named “Internet Research, Inc.” which moved from Olgino to 55 Savushkina Street in St. Petersburg earlier this year...
Other areas with the highest percentages of such searches were Perekatny, population 244, and Yablonovsky, population 30,518—both suburbs of the North Caucasus city of Krasnodar, capital of Krasnodar Territory in southern Russia.,,,
Searches for the name of an extremist Ukrainian parliamentarian named Oleg Lyashko turned up the highest in Perekatny and Zelyony Gorod, a suburb of Nizhny Novgorod where both Otakvot and the systems administrators found a high incidence of the Ukrainian war terms and therefore believe there is a “troll factory” there.

Quite clever work, using Google Trends software.
Clearly there are many troll factories working away in Russia, producing Putin's propaganda.
[Not surprising. Minsk II is now a joke. Ánd the heavy equipment has been moved near the front line.
I read yesterday that the osce were saying that they were blocked from almost half the area that Putin controls in the Donbas. ]

He believes that by influencing the mayor Vitali Klitschko and his entourage in Kiev stores all business schemes odious Liovochkin. [former Regions scumball].
