Ukraine crisis. News in Brief. Friday 12 June [Ukrainian sources]
Fri Jun 12, 2015 6:13 am
FRIDAY
Please scroll down to view items added during the course of the day
News -
Fighting on the frontline continues. Putin clearly wants to keep the war going.
His Russian empire is clouding his brain. At the expense of thousands upon thousands of Ukrainian lives.
The Russian people do nothing to stop him, and are complicit in this murder. Along with all the Russian "journalists".
Update; 1300. Ukrainian tv News - apparently "contact" between two planes, one Russian, one American, over the Black Sea.
Weather -
Blue sky, sunshine, as usual. It has been like this for a week.
I open the windows when I get up. Now about 22C. Only 26 predicted for today. ok.
Poster - Billboard, in various locations in Kiev -
немає жодних державних грошей ; є тільки гроші платників податків
"There is no such thing as public money; there is only taxpayers' money." - the face you will recognise, I am sure...
I believe said at her Speech to the Conservative Party Conference on October 14, 1983.

I missed this article - found it doing a random google search. In English, by Yatseniuk!! 3 days old.

What is at stake in Ukraine if Russia continues its onslaught
http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/what-is-at-stake-in-ukraine/2015/06/08/5915362e-0d20-11e5-adec-e82f8395c032_story.html
By Arseniy Yatsenyuk June 8
Arseniy Yatsenyuk is prime minister of Ukraine.
Ukraine is fighting a war on two fronts. The one you see on television is taking place in the east of our country, where thousands of Russian troops are engaged in an armed aggression against Ukraine’s territorial integrity, including the illegal annexation of Crimea.
Less visible, but just as important, is Ukraine’s war against the Soviet past and the legacy of corruption and misrule that has held us back for so many years. These battles must be fought and won together because they are essentially about the same thing — Ukraine’s desire to build a prosperous and democratic future.

At 2 a.m. today, the terrorists blew up part of the Popasna-Roty railway in the Ukrainian army-controlled part of the Luhansk oblast, oblast governor, Henady Moskal writes in Facebook June 12.
The explosion was carried out by the enemy terrorist group, Ukraine army spokesman says.
The blast may affect the generation of electricity in the area.
The damage is being repaired by rescue workers. However, their work is complicated by the fact that the approaches to the scene of the accident have been mined by the terrorists, Moskal says.

The economic blockade of Donbas will continue until there is progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements, Poroshenko said addressing officials in Mariupol June 11, Interfax-Ukrayina reports June 12.
“We are willing and ready to restore the economic links with the rebel-held territories in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts and ensure a free flow of people and goods.
Our main condition is that Ukraine is to assume control over its borders with Russia, as has been envisaged by the Minsk agreements,” Pres Poroshenko stressed.
At present, about 400 km of the border with Russia is controlled by Russian border guards and rebels.

Putin is not sober-minded man – Turchynov
Fri Jun 12, 2015 10:19 am
Russia is launching a nuclear race by positioning its nuclear weapons closer to Europe, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksandr Turchynov told in an interview with Kanal 5 June 11, Ukrayinska Pravda reported.
“This is not the first time Putin has threatened the world with Russia’s nuclear club. I wouldn’t describe it as a gesture of a sober-minded person. Given this person runs a huge country with a big nuclear potential, it amounts to a serious threat to the entire world,” Turchynov said.
Russia is deploying its tactical nuclear missiles in Crimea where they can be used against NATO countries, he said.
“Russia won’t stop after the annexation of Crimea. Kremlin has not merely broken collective security system in Europe, Kremlin is eager to change the parity of power – which is especially dangerous,” Turchynov said.
He advised Turkey to block the passage of Russian Navy ships through the Bosporus strait and the world to disconnect Russia from SWIFT.

Moscow accused of ‘outright lies’ over Ukraine
Fri Jun 12, 2015 10:46 am
The US ambassador to the United Nations has accused Moscow of “outright lies” over the financing and arming of pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Addressing an audience in Kiev, Samantha Power warned the Kremlin it would “pay the price” if it continued to violate international law.
Power told the audience: “Nobody wants there to be damage to the Russian economy. But those are the consequences – that is the diplomatic and economic isolation – that Russia must face in the wake of its aggression up to this point and in the event there is further aggression.”
She also called for the Minsk peace agreements
signed in February and September – to be fully implemented.
Russia has repeatedly denied supporting the rebel uprising.

Georgian leader’s appointment makes Ukraine personal for Vladimir Putin
Fri Jun 12, 2015 11:13 am
As Crimea has shown, Mr Putin is no more averse than George Bush was to taking aggressive military action to suit his purpose
“I discussed this personally with Putin a while ago. I said: ‘Vladimir Vladimirovich, the payback for your country for supporting separatists would be that violence would come back to hit you as well.’ Putin said: ‘If anyone tries anything against us, we shall crush them like cockroaches.’”
Mikheil Saakashvili, the then President of Georgia, was describing his conversation with the Russian leader when I interviewed him four years ago. It took place soon after suicide bombings at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport, carried out in revenge, it was claimed, for the Kremlin’s military operations in the Caucasus.
I had gone to Tbilisi straight from covering the fall of President Zine el-Abedine Ben Ali in Tunisia, in what was the start of the Arab Spring, although we were not to know that at the time. Mr Saakashvili said that what happened in Tunisia was of transitory interest. The real problem, he wanted to stress, would lie with Russia in eastern Europe. So, he was half right in his analysis.......................

U.S. Says Russia 'Arming, Bankrolling, Fighting' Alongside Ukraine Rebels
Fri Jun 12, 2015 11:26 am
The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations says Russia is "training, arming, bankrolling, and fighting alongside" pro-Moscow rebels battling government forces in eastern Ukraine.
In an emotional June 11 address to an audience in Kyiv, Samantha Power accused Russia of spreading "outright lies" about the Ukraine conflict intended to hide its involvement in a war she portrayed as aimed at thwarting Kyiv's alliance with the West.
She acknowledged that Ukraine faced problems even "before Russia began training, arming, bankrolling, and fighting alongside its separatist proxies in eastern Ukraine, something the Kremlin continues to deny."
Lauding Ukraine's record on media freedoms and transparency in the face of its conflict with Russia, Power accused Moscow of fomenting unrest in Ukraine in order to derail reform efforts after last year's Maidan street protests that helped oust former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.
"It seems the Russian government's cynical calculation in fueling this aggression was that a new Ukrainian government and newly empowered Ukrainian civil society would be so consumed by the military threat to their nation and so burdened by its destabilizing effects that they would not be able to focus on carrying out the project of the Maidan," Power said..............

OSCE Monitor Says Ukraine Separatists Man Checkpoints With Children
Fri Jun 12, 2015 11:29 am
Michael Bociurkiw told a news conference in Kyiv on June 11 that it was the second time recently that OSCE monitors saw children, this time during a visit to the village of Shyrokyne.
"During that most recent visit our monitors did spot what appear to be underage children as well at the checkpoints, and if my memory serves me correctly, this is the second time in recent times that we've seen children and some of them with arms," Bociurkiw said.
He added that, despite assertions to the contrary, neither the Ukrainian forces nor the separatists completed the withdrawal of heavy weapons as agreed during truce talks in February in Minsk.......

Los Angeles Times: Putin, once critical of Stalin, now embraces Soviet dictator's tactics
Fri Jun 12, 2015 5:26 pm
Only six years ago, President Vladimir Putin visited the Polish port of Gdansk, birthplace of the Solidarity movement that threw off Soviet domination, and reassured his Eastern European neighbors that Russia had only friendly intentions. Putin spoke harshly that day of the notorious World War II-era pact that former Soviet leader Josef Stalin had signed with Adolf Hitler — an agreement that cleared the way for the Nazi occupation of Poland and Soviet domination of the Baltics — calling it a "collusion to solve one's problems at others' expense."
But Putin's view of history appears to have undergone a startling transformation. Last month, the Russian leader praised the 1939 nonaggression accord with Hitler as a clever maneuver that forestalled war with Germany. Stalin's 29-year reign, generally seen by Russians in recent years as a dark and bloody chapter in the nation's history, has lately been applauded by Putin and his supporters as the foundation on which the great Soviet superpower was built.
Across a resurgent Russia, Stalin lives again, at least in the minds and hearts of Russian nationalists who see Putin as heir to the former dictator's model of iron-fisted rule. Recent tributes celebrate Stalin's military command acumen and geopolitical prowess. His ruthless repression of enemies, real and imagined, has been brushed aside by today's Kremlin leader as the cost to be paid for defeating the Nazis. As Putin has sought to recover territory lost in the 1991 Soviet breakup, his Stalinesque claim to a right to a "sphere of influence" has allowed him to legitimize the seizure of Crimea from Ukraine and declare an obligation to defend Russians and Russian speakers beyond his nation's borders.
Putin's embrace of Stalin's power-play tactics is applauded by many Russians and other former Soviet citizens as the sort of decisive leadership they longed for while watching communism collapse around them. To the proponents of a reinvigorated Russia, reformist Mikhail Gorbachev and his successor, Boris Yeltsin, are seen as having submitted Russia to Western domination. A poll this spring by the independent Levada Center found 39% of respondents had a positive opinion of Stalin. As to the millions killed, 45% of those surveyed agreed that the deaths could be justified for the greater accomplishments of winning the war, building modern industries and growing to eventually give their U.S. nemesis a battle for supremacy in the arms race and conquering outer space.
The share of Russians who look back approvingly has been increasing steadily in recent years, and the segment of those who tell pollsters they have no opinion on his place in their history has shot up even more sharply, said Denis Volkov, a sociologist with the Levada Center. He points to this year's massive Victory Day events as the Kremlin's message to ungrateful neighbors that they owe their peace and prosperity to the wartime deaths of more than 20 million Soviet citizens.
"The figure of Stalin is being justified through the war," Volkov said. "There is an attitude now that, yes, there were repressions and, yes, there were huge losses, but we won the war after all."
Victory exonerated Stalin's excesses, just as it does Putin's "strongman" posture toward neighbors and former Soviet subjects now outside the Russian Federation's borders, Volkov said.

Stalin has weathered more than six decades of historical revisions to maintain his standing as a rival to the West, "which is the context in which he interests Putin," said Nikolai Svanidze, a writer and historian whose grandfathers died in Stalin's political purges.
"Just as Stalin defeated the West 70 years ago by capturing half of Europe," Svanidze said, "we are defeating the West again today. Crimea is our Berlin, our Reichstag, and there is no way it will be restored to Ukraine in the foreseeable future."
Svanidze also predicts there will be no more credible elections as long as Putin chooses to stay in power. That, he said, is another parallel with Stalin's lifetime sinecure as Soviet leader.

Russian Youth Pays Price For Speaking Out Over Ukraine
Fri Jun 12, 2015 5:45 pm
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Aleksandr Herzen, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Andrei Sakharov. Now, a 17-year-old from a Moscow suburb is joining such notables in the long-standing Russian tradition of being exiled for his political views.
"All the democrats in Russia were sent into exile," teenager Vlad Kolesnikov says, "and I feel like I have been sent into exile."
For some weeks now, Kolesnikov has been leading a quixotic and lonely campaign to protest Russia's annexation of the Ukrainian region of Crimea and Moscow's involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Most recently, he wore a T-shirt with a Ukrainian flag and the words "Return Crimea" on it to his school in the Moscow suburb of Podolsk. He tells how a school official met him outside the classroom.
"You know, I will never forget how he looked," Kolesnikov tells RFE/RL's Russian Service. "At first he looked at me like a normal, sane person. But when he saw my shirt, he looked into my face and I saw such hatred!"
In class a few minutes later, Kolesnikov says, the student sitting in front of him turned around and said, "Kolesnikov, do you want me to smash in your face now or later?"
A few days later -- after Kolesnikov published a couple of Facebook posts about the incident -- he was jumped by some classmates. He insists that he wasn't beaten up. "It was just a split lip, a few bruises, some bumps on the head, and three drops of blood," he says.

Putin’s Actions Undercut Putin’s Arguments Regarding Ukraine
Fri Jun 12, 2015 5:50 pm
“Putin cannot present the annexation of Crimea in a way that the Europeans will consider it as well-based,” the paper says.
By Paul Goble* for “Windows on Eurasia”:
Russian actions in Crimea and the Donbas “have weakened Russian arguments about the change of power in Kyiv” at the time of the Maidan and thus cost Moscow support in European and other Western capitals, according to a lead article in Nezavisimaya Gazeta on June 9.
In his interview with Corriere della Sera, Vladimir Putin repeated his longstanding views about the Maidan and the subsequent change of power in Ukraine, arguing that the change in power in Kyiv was unconstitutional and that the West should not be supporting those who came to power as a result (ng.ru/editorial/2015-06-09/2_red.html).
Moreover, in the same interview, Putin suggested that the reason the Maidan happened was because then incumbent President Viktor Yanukovych did not immediately sign an agreement with the European Union. “But the new authorities also put off its signing. So why should the former have been overthrown if they behaved reasonably?” is Putin’s view.
Many would dispute Putin’s version of events and suggest that Yanukovych “delegitimized himself” as a result of a whole range of actions. But Putin’s argument “is not without an internal logic” and might have been accepted by Europe as significant “if it were not for two ‘buts’ – Crimea and the Donbas.”
Most of the European political establishment and society, the Moscow paper’s editors say, “consider that Russia seized and continues to occupy the territory of a sovereign state,” something that for them is “completely unacceptable.” And consequently, they are not interested in what Putin has to say about the Maidan even while they are convinced that Kyiv’s effort to join the West and “defend itself from an aggressive neighbor” is completely reasonable.
“Putin cannot present the annexation of Crimea in a way that the Europeans will consider it as well-based,” the paper says. The Kosovo argument “doesn’t work,” given that Milosevich was in the eyes of the Europeans carrying out a genocide against the Albanians, something for which there was no analogy in Ukraine...................

This is a clear indication that Putin's found himself in a pickle, as he has recently gone to Italy and who knows where else for support. If he wasn't concerned, he wouldn't be doing what he's doing.
Sounds to me he knows he's running out of time and needs some help to at least be able to save face in the eyes of his people, knowing they can take him out as czar Nicholas was. Soon after, Nicholas and his family were excuted. That's when Lenin came into the picture, once he returned to Moscow from exile.
There were actually previous czars that also reached out to the rest of Europe, to try to save themselves. Putin must read Russian history books on a daily basis.
