Ukraine crisis. News in brief. Monday 14 September [Ukraine sources]
Mon Sep 14, 2015 12:37 am
MONDAY
Please scroll down to view news items added during the course of the day
News -
Madman Putin fired 8 times at the Ukrainian people yesterday.
Update - 2 Ukrainian soldiers killed. 2 injured. And one missing without trace.
It was all quiet for one day. But clearly an order now from Putin for more deaths.
Actually, I think he is trying slowly to get rid of his mercenaries - save money and problems. Fewer and fewer witnesses.
Weather -
This week is looking better. Last week was very cool.
Should get near 20 today for Kiev, maybe 25 further south.
The morning cloud has cleared, and now blue sky where I am.
Schengen -
Germany has introduced controls at the border with Austria, and the Czech republic has done the same.
So much for the Schengen visa zone!
Oliver Carroll, Shaun Walker -
Carroll. Not bad report in the Independent - quasi interview with Poroshenko.
But the goofball rolled up to interview the President in jeans. Talk about arrogance.
Walker - looks like the Russiaprofile reporter is in Kiev. Bad news. Expect an article in the Guardian about one or more of -
a) Ukrainian fascists, b) Ukrainian nazis, c) Pravi sector - Svoboda attacking jews in Uman? .... or something else bad about Ukraine.

MH17 case: possible probe target Alexander Borodai returns to Moscow life [Engl]

In the meantime, the gang's all here. You could have bumped into Marat Bashirov, the former prime minister of the separatist Luhansk People's Republic, at the Moscow Economic Forum this March, where he gave a lecture titled "Risks, sanctions, lobbying". Bashirov, a Moscow government relations consultant once employed by the oligarch Viktor Vekselberg's holding company, was sanctioned by the European Union in July 2014 along with Borodai.
A snappy dresser, he remarked on a government airstrike on his headquarters in July last year in a dry post on Facebook: "It seems my Tom Ford suit has been killed. Now I will hold government sessions in camouflage."
There is also Igor Girkin, the battle commander who once bragged that if not for his attacks on police stations in April last year, there would be no war in Ukraine. He now appears at lectures with far-right nationalists and has gone spectacularly off message, accusing Russia of abandoning the separatist republics in Ukraine that it helped to create.
===
Sydney Morning Herald. I wonder how the relatives of the Australian dead feel about all this?
Borodai, when asked whether he would go to the Netherlands to face trial if accused. "This is a story that is long in the past for me
But not for the relatives of the dead, I am sure.

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko: We're inching towards peace with Russia [Engl]
Mon Sep 14, 2015 1:52 am
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/ukraines-president-petro-poroshenko-were-inching-towards-peace-10499180.html
Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko, who says he has worked “every day and night” of those 15 months, is not ready to dream just yet. “This is not the end of the war, but instead a change in tactics,” he told The Independent in a rare interview. “We know where the Russians and their proxies are still hiding their weapons, their tanks and their artillery – for now the order has been given to cease fire, but for how long?”
====
Interview with Oliver Carroll. Nice exclusive for him. Almost - apparently with the WP and Die Welt.
[Carroll with the beard. Wearing jeans? Unreal. Fresh out of Cambridge, one would think! - yet to enter the real world, it appears.
Or maybe he thinks he is one of the Beatles? (His part of the world).
Left of Poro, looking at the photo, Birnbaum of the Washington Post. Other guy from Die Welt, Gerhard Gnauck. Both wearing suit and tie.
Don't the Independent pay this pinhead enough for him to be able to buy some trousers?? And a real shirt? I could lend him a tie.]
But frankly not much of an interview. Very few direct quotes, for whatever reason.
He asked about the grenade attack at the Rada, but Svoboda was not even mentioned.
Sakashville also, in Odessa... no counter to the criticism. Poro said that he would make a good PM - of Georgia.
Verdict - fairly bland.
The interview in Die Welt here, with a heading "Ich furchte gar nichts mehr". Forgive my missing umlauts. Translates basically as
I do not fear any more. Online translation - I fear nothing.
http://www.welt.de/politik/ausland/article146366365/Ich-fuerchte-gar-nichts-mehr.html
printed as a straight interview.

Guarded Optimism as Cease-Fire Holds in East Ukraine [Engl]
Mon Sep 14, 2015 1:55 am
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/14/world/europe/parties-in-ukraine-conflict-are-urged-to-build-on-progress.html?_r=0
BERLIN — Buoyed somewhat by the relative success of a two-week-old cease-fire in eastern Ukraine, the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine have urged fighters and mediators to build on that progress and withdraw weapons and remove land mines as well as prepare for local elections later this year.
The four nations held what the German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, described as one of their less confrontational meetings late Saturday, reviewing as they have on six previous occasions the state of a truce and overall accord that has never fully held or been carried out.

Russia's Regional Elections Marred by Pressure on Observers, Fraud [Engl]
Mon Sep 14, 2015 2:14 am
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/russias-regional-elections-marred-by-pressure-on-observers-fraud/530244.html
Most of the campaigns were heavily dominated by pro-Kremlin candidates. Only one region — Kostroma — went ahead with the participation of opposition members openly critical of Putin, putting the region east of Moscow in the media spotlight.
Ilya Yashin, a close ally of the opposition leader Boris Nemtsov who was shot dead in central Moscow earlier this year, headed the list of the People's Freedom Party (Parnas) for the elections in the Kostroma region. Parnas had also submitted candidates for elections in three other regions, but they were refused registration on technical pretexts.
On Sunday, the offices of the Otkrytye Vybory (Open Elections) organization in Kostroma were stormed by police who said that the premises had to be vacated as they were a crime scene where a murder had been committed, according to a live video broadcast. Elections observers and the media were forced out of the building, despite multiple complaints.

Moscow Times closes forum due to abuse, trolls
Mon Sep 14, 2015 2:20 am
I just noticed this at the bottom of the Moscow Times article above. Not sure how long this has applied for.
===
Dear reader,
Due to the increasing number of users engaging in personal attacks, spam, trolling and abusive comments, we are no longer able to host our forum as a site for constructive and intelligent debate.
It is with regret, therefore, that we have found ourselves forced to suspend the commenting function on our articles.
The Moscow Times remains committed to the principle of public debate and hopes to welcome you to a new, constructive forum in the future.
Regards,
The Moscow Times
===
Sad, but a sign of the times. The Kyiv Post did a similar thing when some people were critical of Tymoshenko and his butt-kissing supporter, Taras Kuzio.
Kuzio criticised Yatseniuk as a jew, and other people - well - anybody in opposition to Tymoshenko was attacked in the paper, at that time.
Some people wrote critical comments about this, and were swiftly banned.
Then the Kyiv Post introduced registration, but only allowed Tymoshenko supporters to join and comment. Probably no different today. I think Kuzio still produces garbage for the KP. Shows that $$$$ still rules in the Ukrainian press world. In this case, Tymoshenko's $$$$.

Budget Airline EasyJet Cancels London-Moscow Flights [Engl]
Mon Sep 14, 2015 2:26 am
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/business/article/budget-airline-easyjet-cancels-london-moscow-flights/530202.html
"The decision has been taken in response to the significant and sustained reduction in demand for travel between Moscow and London in recent months which has been driven by a number of factors including the weakness of the Russian economy together with the tightening of the visa approval process," the statement said....
The airline said in May it was scrapping its Moscow-Manchester flights from Oct. 23 due to falling demand,...
British tourists to Russia, on the other hand, now face an extra hurdle when obtaining a Russian visa: They have to visit the visa center in London in person to provide their fingerprints, a measure that has put off some would-be tourists who live outside the capital.

The road to isolation. The road to North Korea.

Omelchenko again wants to become the mayor of Kiev (Hvilya)
Mon Sep 14, 2015 3:52 am

It is reported that on September 12, Kyiv hosted the 11th regular congress of the party "Yednist" in which it was decided to nominate Omelchenko candidate for mayor of Kiev.
===
Personal opinion, from talking to people in and around Kiev - Klitchko still very popular, even among the babushkas, who particularly like him because
a) he is tall, and b) he is good looking. Well - that's what the babkas told me.

The Russians around Putin are living in outer space.
Maybe a few luxury mansions around Putin's place - Yanukovich, and his crime gangland leaders.
But what about the other tens of thousands living in squalid apartments in Sevastopol, or Simpferopol?
As for Beverly Hills -
I don't think this guy has been to LA. Suggests he takes a bus from downtown south... and learns some Spanish to talk to the bus driver!
And then go back, and take a bus west to Beverly Hills. Amazing amazing contrast.

Madness by Yarosh, in my opinion.
Svoboda - really down in the dumps following the scandal at Mukacheva - over who controls the contraband scene there, and then
the grenade attack at the Rada. 3 dead at least. And over 50 soldiers still in hospital.
I don't expect them to get much support at the elections in 6 weeks' time.

I also recall, back in those years where Nelson (Editor) and a few others USE to indulge in reading Kyiv Post, till we found out their shenanigans that included Taras Kuzio (A Tymoshenko prostitute). Also Anthony Van Der Craats which was and probably still is a Kremlin troll.
The same occurred in their article comments. Other news outlets also had the same issue and had to discontinue their comments section. It's still being practiced nowadays.
But they'll all lose in the end, as the mother source is losing on this investment. Anyone can smell a troll, these days. Problem is, they're using an old NKVD disguise by imitating Ukrainians which many of us are smart enough to catch them at their act. But many aren't so bright and fall for their propaganda.
And now Bonner makes you subscribe to read that propaganda which is mainly pasting articles from other sources, not from his journalists. Why pay, when you can get it from the original source?
He had a good news source, till he got money hungry. We post the same here at no cost. Some do offer us salo which we happily accept.

Mon Sep 14, 2015 12:31 pm
The terrorists require fake elections scheduled by the so-called "DPR" and "LPR" to deadlock the situation and deny possibility to return the occupied Donbas peacefully.
NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov said, Censor.NET reports citing LB.ua.
In particular, Turchynov said that the Minsk agreements provide for the holding of elections in the occupied territories only under certain conditions:
- Withdrawal of the Russian troops;
- Renewal of the domination of the Ukrainian laws and Constitution in the occupied territory;
- The release of captured government agencies and enterprises;
- Creation of conditions for the work of the Ukrainian mass media, political parties, etc.
"None of this is done today. At the same time, they made a decision to hold elections in the "DPR" Oct. 18 and in the "LPR" in early November. These fake elections are necessary to deadlock the situation again, to impede peaceful format of return of occupied Donbas," the NSDC secretary said.
As previously reported, Oleksandr Turchynov also noted that Ukraine would recognize fake elections in the so-called "DPR" / "LPR" by no means.
