UN Special Envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura urged the international community to prevent the partition of Syria as a result of the ongoing armed conflict in the country, according to "BBC".
"At this stage we must at all costs avoid a continuation of conflict and division, which is in fact already being considered as a possible option. We believe that it would be a tragedy, "- said de Mistura at a press conference in Geneva.
According to the envoy, the situation in Syria could become a "toxic cocktail" which will be visible scenario conflicts in Afghanistan, Libya and Somalia.
De Mistura also noted that after the Russian airstrikes about 40 thousand Syrians have fled their homes and moved to other parts of the country.
UN Special Envoy called official Damascus and the Russian armed forces to cease military activity in areas of Zabadani, Kefrayya and Foix and facilitate the evacuation of the civilian population of these settlements.
On Tuesday, de Mistura will discuss the Syrian conflict with Russian leaders in Moscow before heading to Washington.
