President of Turkey, Recep Erdogan, during his historic state visit to Greece on December 7, has filed territorial claims to Athens, criticizing the authorities of Greece for the representatives of the Turkish minority and accusing the European Union of delaying the implementation of the treaty on refugees.
This was reported by Deutsche Welle.
"Air and sea borders could be improved," Erdogan said.
Even before the visit to Athens, the Turkish president questioned the Lausanne Treaty of 1923. In accordance with this treaty, Greece received almost all the islands in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Turkey. Since then, Turkey and Greece have not stopped disputes over the border.
Greek President Prokopis Pavlopulos ruled out the possibility of revision of the Treaty of Lausanne.
"For us, this agreement is not a subject of trade. He does not require any revision or update,"- he said during a meeting with Erdogan in Athens.
Erdogan blamed the Greek authorities for not allowing the Turkish minority to choose the Mufti, contrary to the treaty, and appoint them themselves.
He also accused the European Union of failing to fulfill its promises in the economic sphere arising from the pact of readmission of illegal migrants concluded between the parties. The European Union has not fulfilled any of its promises in this area, while Turkey has fulfilled its obligations in full, Erdogan said. He, in particular, accused the EU of not paying the promised financial assistance.
The publication denotes that this is the first visit of the Turkish President to Greece over the past 65 years. Erdogan has already visited Greece, but as prime minister of Turkey.
