The Anonymous Bitcoin?: How Anyone Can See Your Transactions

Researchers at the University of Qatar and Hamad Bin Khalifa University have discovered how bitcoin transactions can be identified several years ago, which were previously considered anonymous.

As Wired writes , they were able to link more than 100 drug purchases to the Silk Road site with real customer accounts on social networks.

"Suppose you bought drugs on Silk Road five years ago when a digital black market was opened for any smuggling," the newspaper writes. "Today, you can regret this decision for a number of reasons. In the end, for those four bitcoins, which you spent on a package of hallucinogenic mushrooms, you could now buy Alfa Romeo, but the main thing - you can now easily identify."

Researchers at the University of Qatar and Hamad bin Khalifa University have published documents that show how easy it is to find information about Bitcoin transactions.

They were able to link more than 100 bitcoin payments to "dark" sites with public customer accounts. In more than 20 cases, they were able to find even the real names and locations of these people.

"The operational security of Bitcoins is low," says Husam Al-Javakheri, a research director at the University of Qatar. "When something is written on the blockade, it can always be seen in the history of operations and disclose this information by violating the anonymity of users."

Researchers have for the first time collected data from dozens of bitcoin-wallets that are used for donations and purchases on sites in the alternative Tor network, where you can access a variety of resources - from WikiLeaks to the now-existing Silk Road.

They compared this data to those that are openly accessible - in public accounts in Twitter and in the popular Bitcoin Talk forum.

By simply searching direct links between these two sets of data, researchers found over 125 transactions made on "dark" sites and easily found buyers. Of the detected transactions, 46 were WikiLeaks donations, and 22 were payments by Silk Road for drug supply.

Although researchers do not disclose the personal data of these 22 people, they say that some of them posted in their social media their location, age, gender, email address and even full names.
