The Pentagon uses Google's facial recognition technology for its drones on video Empty The Pentagon uses Google's facial recognition technology for its drones on video

Google's "Artificial Intelligence" technology can help US military in analyzing hours of video captured by unmanned aerial vehicles

Google has confirmed that it allows the Pentagon to use some of its image recognition technologies in military operations, reports BBC .

Such a statement came after an article on the Gizmodo site, which claims that artificial intelligence technologies are used to analyze the images made by military rifles. The publication indicates that many Web giant employees learned about such cooperation only last week with an internal mailing list. And some of them "were outraged", add journalists.

Google spokesman said that the company provided the US Defense Department with the opportunity to use the tools of the TensorFlow - a set of programs for "training" cars.

"The technology designates the image so that it is then checked by people and is not used for attacks," she added.

Google says they have discussed this topic in detail inside the company and are working to ensure the safe use of technology for training machines.

"Although Google's ex-leader Eric Schmidt advised the Pentagon in 2016, the web-giant always tries to distance himself from US military ties, and even refused to participate in one of the Pentagon robots, although they had every chance of winning "It is precisely because of concern about accusations of cooperation with the army," the Air Force said.

According to Gizmodo, the current issue is the "Maven project" related to the use of drone. Last July, it was reported that within its framework algorithms would be used to identify specific objects in large arrays of moving or still images.

The idea is for people working with these images to look at the site-specific programs rather than spending time watching the hours of recorded video.

The Ministry of Defense said that they wanted to focus on identifying 38 types of objects related to the struggle against the "Islamic State" in Iraq and Syria.

Google refuses to disclose all details of its involvement in the project. However, as we can conclude, it is not about algorithms for identifying human faces, but about mechanisms for identifying common objects such as automobiles, trees and birds.

It is also possible that this technology is not used by the drones themselves during their flights.

Google is not the only American company involved in the project.

Previously, the manufacturer of Nvidia processors mentioned in their blogs about the "Maven project", which could be understood as the involvement of the company in this development.

Experts point out that relatively cheap drones such as MQ-1 Predator or MQ-9 Reaper result in their operators getting too much video material.

It is on solving the problem of the complexity of human perception and analysis of such arrays of video and directed the project.

In February, the authorities of the American city of Louisville (Kentucky) reported on their plans to launch a network of drones that would respond to shooting and hit the scene of emergency services.
