US President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to develop a plan to reduce the number of US troops in South Korea.
This is reported by The New York Times with a link to its own sources.
It is noted that the reduction of the military contingent "will not be one of the subjects of bargaining in negotiations Trump with the leader of the DPRK Kim Jong Yin."
The publication says the signing of a peace agreement between South Korea and the DPRK will reduce the need to keep 23.5 thousand American soldiers on the peninsula.
According to the agreement, which expires in 2018, about half of the cost of maintaining American contingent is South Korea - more than $ 800 million. The White House prefers to translate them completely into Seoul.
Earlier, the president of South Korea, Mun Cheng Ying, said that US troops will remain in the country after possible signing of a peace agreement with the DPRK.
