The US wants to check whether the IT giants are suppressing freedom of speech and competition
Wed Sep 12, 2018 3:55 pm
US Attorney General Jeff Seshns said he is considering investigating Amazon, Google, Facebook and Twitter, and convening Republican Prosecutors for a briefing on September 25th.
This edition of Business Insider reported spokesman for the Ministry of Justice Devin O'Malley.
According to him, the Attorney General is concerned that "these companies can prevent free competition, and suppress free exchange of opinions on their platforms."
It should be noted that the briefing by the Attorney General will take place against the background of statements by US President Donald Trump that Google, Amazon and Facebook are likely to violate antitrust law, being de facto monopolists in the field of information technology.
Seshens and Trump did not disclose details of the monopoly of the listed companies.
Recall that in June 2018, the European Commission fined Google for a record $5 billion for monopolistic practices in the mobile technology market.
Earlier, Trump said that Twitter, Facebook and Google were trying to "silence the views of Republican supporters."
Also, on September 5, representatives of Facebook and Twitter gave testimony in the US Congress over disinformation in social networks.
