Sept. 27, at the age of 76, died Jefferson Airplane Martial Ballin.

Marty (Martin Source) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in the family of Catherine Eugene (in the Talbot Girls) and Joseph Buchwald. His grandparents on the paternal line are Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe.
In 1962, Martin took Marti Balin's pseudonym and started recording with Challenge Records, releasing "Nobody But You" and "I Specialize in Love". In 1964, he was the leader of the folk music quartet called "The Town Criers" (Urban Gorlani), with other members of the band Larry Vargot, Jan Ellicson and Bill Collins.
Balin was the founder and one of the leading Jefferson Airplane vocalists from 1965 to 1971.
In 1971, he departed from Jefferson Airplane and produced an album for the Grootna group before joining them as a singer for the Bodacious DF album. In 1974, Paul Kantner asked Marty to write a song for his new Jefferson Starship project, and together they wrote "Caroline," which appeared on the "Dragon Fly" album. Marty finally joined Jefferson Starship in 1975. In 1978 Balin left the group.
In 1985, he teamed up with Paul Kantner and Jack Kezeda to form a KBC group. After the collapse of the KBC group, it again began to tour with Jefferson Airplane.
