North Korea will not abandon nuclear weapons unilaterally, believing that the United States should first eliminate the nuclear threat on its part
This is reported by the AR with reference to the Central Telegraph Agency of Korea.
"On Thursday, North Korea said it would never unilaterally renounce its nuclear weapons if the United States was not the first to eliminate a nuclear threat," the statement said.
According to the agency, such a statement could damage the fragile diplomacy between Washington, Seoul and Pyongyang in the issues of the nuclear crisis.
A similar statement also says that North Korea is demanding from the United States the withdrawal or significant reduction of US troops deployed in South Korea, which will be a serious stumbling block to a potential disarmament treaty.
DPRK leader Kim Jong-il and US President Donald Trump met on June 12 in Singapore, where they agreed on the process of "full denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula without specifying when and how it would take place.
At present, nuclear talks between countries are deadlocked. The United States wants North Korea to provide a detailed report on nuclear and missile facilities that will be tested and dismantled as part of a potential deal, while Pyongyang insists on the lifting of sanctions to begin with the DPRK.
