Gunman killed after causing mass panic and opening fire on busy Los Angeles strip

A gunman was shot by police after opening fire in Studio City's bustling business district Friday afternoon, prompting hundreds to shelter in place as officers investigated.
The incident brought a massive police response and closed off much of neighborhood, including Ventura and Laurel Canyon boulevards.
Witness Paul Gilmartin told the Los Angeles Times he was at a Peet's Coffee & Tea on Ventura when he heard several shots fired.
Then he saw a man in his 40s or 50s with curly hair, wearing a black jacket and holding a gun, he said. People in the area starting running in a panic.
The man fired two shots into the air and two shots to the ground as he sat on a bench, or raised planter, outside Union Bank.
"It was so bizarre," Gilmartin said. "He wasn't agitated ... He looked he was just waiting for the cops."
The man looked side to side, "kind of calmly looking around.".................
