The first batch of food banned by Russian counter sanctions was destroyed in the Belgorod region of the Russian Federation today: at least 10 tons of cheese, which importation to Russia had been prohibited, was crushed by bulldozers on domestic solid garbage dump.
The press service of the of Rosselkhoznadzor (Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance) Office for Belgorod region reported that the load of cheese of unknown manufacturer was detained at the Russian border late last month, Censor.NET informs citing Znak.com.
The process of destruction of 10 tons of cheese took about an hour. "There was a truckful of cheese. Some blocks of cheese were in boxes and some were without packaging. It was smashed by a 45-ton road roller," the press service of the agency.
Last week, Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the destruction of banned imported food at the Russian border. The government approved the regulations of destruction of the prohibited food after that. Some experts and politicians called for a revision of this approach to the imported food banned by the Russian counter sanctions.
In addition, the Russians also opposed the destruction of food. The Change.org website petitioned Putin not to destroy the food but distribute it to needy persons through charitable organizations. Almost 264,000 Russians has supported the petition as of now.
