60 MEPs call EU governments to boycott FIFA World Cup in Russia, - Harms

60 Members of the European Parliament from 16 different Member States and 5 different political groups support the call to boycott the FIFA World Cup 2018 hosted by Russia.

Rebecca Harms, expert on Eastern Europe of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, has initiated an open letter to call on EU governments to stay away from the FIFA World Cup taking place in Russia in June 2018, Censor.NET reports citing MEP's tweet.

"Vladimir Putin is responsible for the occupation and war in Ukraine. He supports the brutal dictator and torturer Assad. The Russian army is responsible for horrendous war crimes in the war in Syria. President Putin is not a good host for the World Cup, while the war in Syria and Ukraine continues. He is not a friendly host as long as he supports right-wing extremist and anti-democratic parties in the EU, and tries to meddle into elections.

"Democratic governments should not contribute to Putin’s self-staging as the strong man, whom the great and powerful of the world honour. Nobody should forget that three days after the Winter Olympics in Sochi, the Russian army occupied Crimea. This shows how serious he was four years ago about the Olympic idea of mutual understanding between nations," Harms said in a comment to her letter.

Republicans criticise Trump defence of Putin as a ‘killer’ (Financial Times)

Remarks that US is not ‘so innocent’ draws fire from party leaders

Donald Trump on Sunday was criticised by prominent Republicans after saying in a televised interview that the US was no better than Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

The US president has said he wants improved relations with Mr Putin, a former KGB agent who has been accused of ordering the deaths of opposition politicians, dissidents and journalists during his nearly two decades in power.

When Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly challenged Mr Trump in the interview, saying “Putin’s a killer,” the president replied: “There are a lot of killers. We have a lot of killers . . . What, you think our country is so innocent?”

The comments, in an interview to be aired ahead of the Super Bowl football championship, drew fire from several Republican lawmakers. Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska said on ABC’s “This Week” that the US was “not at all” like Mr Putin’s Russia.

“There is no moral equivalency between the United States of America, the greatest freedom-living nation in the history of the world and the murderous thugs that are in Putin’s defence of his cronyism,” Mr Sasse said.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell also broke with Mr Trump on CNN. “I do think America’s exceptional. America is different. We don’t operate in any way the way the Russians do,” he said. “I think there’s a clear distinction here that all Americans understand . . . I obviously don’t see this issue the same way he does.”

Senator Marco Rubio tweeted: “When has a Democratic political activists [sic] been poisoned by the GOP, or vice versa? We are not the same as #Putin.”..................

The nickname of the downed Russian helicopter in Idlib is "The Terminator." Sounds very humanitarian in purpose

Trump was right when he said "Putin's not gonna go into Ukraine". By my own words, I'm already there.
