Ukraine crisis. News in Brief. Monday 24 August. Independence Day [Ukrainian sources]
Mon Aug 24, 2015 1:53 am
MONDAY
День Незалежності
Please scroll down to view news items added during the course of the day.
News -
Reading that Putin's forces attacked Ukraine 82 times yesterday. No word yet on casualties.
UPDATE - no military deaths in the past day; one injured, at Zolotoe. Putin using Grad again. Children injured.
The Russian Ruble is crumbling. 71 against the dollar today; 83 to one euro... incredible.
Oil down a lot also. WTI below 40!! Unreal. Currently at 39.
Remember the revised Russian budget used a price of 50. This is 20% lower already!!
Parade opinions - opinion is divided over whether a parade should take place.
Last year's event was quickly followed by the tragedy of Illovaisk, when perhaps 500 Ukrainians died in a massive attack by Putin's war machine.
Personally, I think the parade, with soldiers, but not with military hardware, was a good idea. And patriotic.
Incidentally, the military are not resting today.
I saw a column of military vehicles moving east today. No holiday for them.
People now will be preparing for the said parade along Kreschatik. I think it starts in just over one hour.
It is rather different this year. I went to the preparations for it. Soldiers from ATO will march in their uniforms.
And there is also a ceremony of the exchanging of flags. This takes some time.
Various Slushba involved. I will post a few pictures below from the rehearsals.
Weather -
A beautiful day. Sunshine. High will be in the mid to high 20s. 70s. Blue sky now. Not one cloud.
1330 now - and near 30C. Warm again.
Crimea -
I saw the Crimean leader yesterday at the Flag Raising. See my photo below.
Spare a thought for him, Crimea, his people. Independence - ? Instead he has occupation and repression.
Just like Hitler did to the Jews. And what Stalin did to the Crimean tartars, amongst tens of millions of others he put to death.
[UEN Exclusive Photo. Higher quality on request.]
Those of you who are eagle eyed will spot Natalie Ann Jaresko , the current Finance Minister, who works with Yatseniuk. She was born in the US. But strong Ukrainian heritage. And she has relatives who sadly died under Stalin - the Holodomor.

Independence Day parade
Mon Aug 24, 2015 2:29 am
A superb male voice choir, made up of members of the armed forces, will be singing the national anthem an under an hour's time.
Wonderful solo to listen out for also, in the Remembrance of those who have died in the Russian war.
Here a major-General. It says "Commander of the fleet" on his shirt. Afraid I don't know his name
Various brigades will be marching. Here, the Border Guard in their distinctive green berets
And remembering those who have died - Мамо, не плач. Я повернусь весною.
The young sailor soloist - in the white uniform - has a wonderful deep voice
Important to remember the flag...
======
All should be live on tv in about 15 minutes time. 10.00 am.
No military vehicles. Soldiers from ATO marching.
My photos - from the rehearsal - taken fairly close to where Poroshenko will be standing. Near the flag pole on Maidan.

During the undeclared war in the Donbas Russia has lost - killed at least 2,000 troops, 3,200 more were seriously injured. This was reported by the Russian edition of "Business Life" in an article titled "Increasing salaries to servicemen in 2015". However, the material in its original form hung on the site for long. It was soon edited, removing information about losses and numbers of payments to relatives of those killed and wounded. In this article a cache Google is still available in the original form. "

True - their are a lot of traitors still in Ukraine. And they need to be weeded out, and sent back to Moscow, to join Yanukovich and his murdering thugs.
Lavrov, Putin, Russia, have killed over ten thousand Ukrainians. Russians are the enemy. Just like Hitler was in 1939.

Ukraine's Poroshenko: 'New Russia' is like 'Mordor' [Engl; BBC]
Mon Aug 24, 2015 9:53 am
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34037743
The Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko, has been addressing a military parade in Kiev to mark the 24th anniversary of Ukraine's independence from Moscow.
More than 2,000 soldiers took part in the ceremony, in heart of the capital, Kiev.
In his speech, Mr Poroshenko compared "New Russia", the territory that pro-Russian troops want to create in eastern Ukraine, to Mordor, the fictional evil country in J.R.R. Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" books.
===
To be honest, pretty cr@p reporting by Stern for the bbc. "Russia denies this, Russia denies that"... sort of report. He should have stayed in bed, and just let somebody report on the parade.
Stern is a freelance goofball from Kansas. Bbc short of money for a real journalist, obviously. What happened to Steve Rosenberg?

Possibly more garbage from Stern. No name to the article.
Two more sentences here start...
"Russia has denied....

Head in the clouds cr@p from the BBC.
BBC in Russian stands for the Russian air force. That says it all.

Ukraine Poll Shows Support For Independence Rose In Year Of Conflict (VIDEO)
Mon Aug 24, 2015 5:02 pm
The findings by the Kyiv-based Razumkov Center come from a survey conducted ahead of Ukraine's August 24 Independence Day celebrations, which commemorate its 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union.
Andriy Bychenko, the director of sociological research at the Razumkov Center, told RFE/RL the survey reflected a surge of patriotic feelings since the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014 and the outbreak of war with separatists about two months later.
Bychenko said that "the fact that Ukraine did not give up" and allow eastern Ukraine to break away from the rest of the country with Russia's military support was "a manifestation, not a cause, of a high level of support for independence."
Not all analysts see the survey as a promising sign for Ukraine, which is struggling with severe economic troubles and an armed conflict that persists despite a cease-fire deal signed in February 2015.
It was impossible for the researchers to conduct their opinion survey in parts of eastern Ukraine now under the control of separatists or on the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in March 2014 after sending in troops and staging a referendum deemed illegal by about 100 countries.
Kyiv-based commentator Oksana Zabuzhko told RFE/RL the poll's indication that only 72 percent of Ukrainians in government-controlled territory support independence was "a most alarming signal for the Ukrainian state."
Still, a similar study conducted in 2014 by the Razumkov Center -- which also did not include residents in Crimea or the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine -- found that only 61 percent of respondents supported Ukraine's independence.
The new poll's results do not mean that a large minority of Ukrainians oppose independence: The survey found that 8 percent of respondents would now vote against independence, while the remaining 20 percent did not offer an opinion......................

Pope Francis meets with children from areas of Ukraine attacked by Russian separatists
Mon Aug 24, 2015 8:41 pm
On the initiative of the Embassy of Ukraine to the Holy See, on Wednesday, August 19, 2015, Pope Francis received at the general audience children from Ukraine that come from the territories of the antiterrorist operation in eastern Ukraine.
During the meeting, held on the eve of 24th anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine, the children, some of whom are orphans from the families of Donbas and ATO soldiers, asked the Holy Father to pray for peace in Ukraine, to visit their homeland and presented the painting depicting an Orthodox cathedral on the backdrop of a Ukrainian landscape.
“Although we are Orthodox, today's meeting with the Pope means to us to revive the hope for a better future and the hope for reconciliation between our people,” Vatican daily newspaper L'Osservatore Romano cited the participants as saying.
From July 22 to August 28, a group of children from the area Ukraine affected by the armed conflict in the East, visit Italy for rehabilitation and recreation under the joint project of the Embassy and the charitable Catholic organization “I Bambini visti dalla Luna” (Cazalincontrada, Abruzzo region), where they live as guests of Italian families.

Ukraine sees no alternatives to Minsk agreements - President
Mon Aug 24, 2015 8:44 pm
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said this during his speech on the occasion of Independence Day, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"Ukraine sees no alternatives to a peaceful settlement, as well as to the Minsk agreements that were supported by the Council of the European Union and the UN Security Council. For the period since February, the number of killed soldiers has decreased by seven times. Russia got the time and the opportunity to feel the impact of sanctions, and we managed to both quantitatively and qualitatively strengthen our defense," Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko says fake election in Donbas poses threat to Minsk peace
Mon Aug 24, 2015 8:53 pm
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande in Berlin on Monday discussed the threat the Minsk peace process is facing due to fake local elections to be held by Russian-backed militants in occupied territories of Donbas in autumn, according to an UNIAN correspondent.
"We've discussed those grave dangers posed by holding fake elections on October 18 and November 1 not under Ukrainian legislation. And all this poses a serious threat to the entire Minsk process," Poroshenko said at a press conference after meeting with Merkel and Hollande in Berlin on Monday.
The sides also addressed the issue of releasing prisoners of war and other hostages held both in militant captivity and in prisons in Russia.
"I hope that the major outcome of our current meeting will be de-escalation in Donbas, an end to bloodshed," he said.
Poroshenko also thanked Merkel and Hollande for assistance in ensuring the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the fulfillment of the technical requirements of the visa free regime.
What is more, the Ukrainian president stressed that his country had consistently carried out its obligations to cease fire, withdraw large-caliber weapons and address humanitarian issues.
Russia and Russian-backed militants are the only threat to the peace process in eastern Ukraine, he added.
On August 6, 2015, President Poroshenko signed a local election law in Ukraine, providing for the October 25 local elections to exclude Donetsk and Luhansk regions. This law was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on July 14 with 257 out of 320 MPs' votes in favor..............
