A special summit of the European Union decided that talks about leaving the UK and the EU will take place "in terms of transparency" and ruled out holding separate talks with EU Member States to London. This is stated in the adopted on Saturday, April 29, at the EU Council of Europe recommendations for negotiations with Brexit.
"The Union will approach the negotiations with a unified position and will cooperate with the United Kingdom only through the channels set out in the guidelines and directives of negotiations. In order not to undermine the position of the Union, there will be no separate negotiations between individual Member States and the United Kingdom on matters relating to the withdrawal of the UK from the EU ", - the document says.
Also, according to the document, the EU is ready to begin work on the trade agreement with Britain, putting it only after the country completes withdrawal from the Union.
"Based on the interests of the Union, the European Council is ready to begin work on an agreement on trade, to be adopted after the United Kingdom will cease to be a Member State of the EU", - stated in the document.
It also reported that a special focus of the document was the protection of the rights of citizens, whose lives are affected Britain out of the EU.
"Harmonization of mutual guarantees to protect the status and rights of EU citizens and the UK, under European Union rules in force at the time of the United Kingdom and the EU will become a priority for the negotiations. Such guarantees should be effective, such enforceable, non-discriminatory and comprehensive, including the right to permanent residence after five years of continuous legal residence ", - stated in the document.
