The United States has provided NATO partners with evidence that Russia has violated the Intermediate-Range and Long Range Missile (MDL) Treaty.
This is written by the German edition Der Spiegel, reports Russian edition of DW.
The head of the Pentagon, James Mattheys, at the closed meeting of the NATO Nuclear Planning Group in early November, demanded from the Allies before the summit that he scheduled for summer 2018 to develop a unified plan of action to force Russia to abide by the provisions of the treaty of the RSMD.
Mettis stressed that, if necessary, NATO countries should be ready to introduce new sanctions against Russia. The Pentagon added that if the Alliance fails to agree, the United States is ready to act alone.
The agreement was concluded between the United States and the USSR indefinitely, it prohibits the production, sensation and deployment of ballistic and cruise missiles ground based on average (from 1000 to 5500 km) and small (from 500 to 1000 km) range.
"The intelligence services of our allies have evidence that Russia has violated the agreement of the RSMD by placing medium-range weapons," said Lithuanian Defense Minister Raimundas Karoblis in an interview with the publication.
At the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of NATO countries on November 28, the United States tried to accept a joint statement that would sharply condemn the actions of the Russian Federation. However, the draft statement was rejected, primarily because of the opposition from Germany.
According to the publication, in mid-December, at the initiative of the United States, a meeting of a special commission to verify the fulfillment of the terms of the agreement of the RSMD should take place.
Germany has also called on Russia to respond as quickly and comprehensively as possible to US accusations.
"We are extremely serious about the existence of evidence of possible violations," said Ursula von der Leyen, defense minister of the Federal Republic of Germany.
