Poland is preparing for a "diplomatic offensive" to deny the EU sanctions against Poland Empty Poland is preparing for a "diplomatic offensive" to deny the EU sanctions against Poland

Fri Dec 29, 2017 2:31 pm
Polish Foreign Minister Vitold Waschykovsky said that the government plans to negotiate with the bloc countries over the next three months in connection with the start of the EU sanction procedure

This is reported by Polskie Radio.

Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Moravetsky intends to hold talks with Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, on January 9. In addition, Vaschikovsky said that Poland would try to talk to various EU member states.

Meanwhile, the Polish prime minister said that Warsaw would try to explain to its European partners why reforms to the justice system are necessary.

According to the head of the Moravetsky secretariat, it is more likely that the prime minister will conduct a diplomatic tour of the EU countries.

It is reported that on Wednesday, January 3, he plans to visit Budapest to meet with Prime Minister of Hungary Victor Orban.

It should be noted that Orban has already stated that Hungary will block any EU action aimed at ending the right of Poland to vote in the European Union.

Recall that the European Commission for the first time in history has decided to initiate a sanction against Poland in violation of the rule of law.

The commission gave the Polish authorities three months to bring legal action, which could remedy the situation. If Poland does not do this, this could lead to sanctions, in particular, to the loss of voice in the EU.

Certificate:

The risk of imposing sanctions against Poland was contradictory, according to the European Union, the steps of the Polish authorities, which, in particular, could destroy the political independence of the courts.

First, in the spring of 2016, the Constitutional Court was reformed, despite street protests and reservations by the Venice Commission. There are fears that because of the reform of judges they will be appointed not by the criterion of professionalism, but by the criterion of loyalty to the authorities.

One of the steps was also the adoption by the Polish MPs of the law on the media, which allowed the government to directly appoint and dismiss the leaders of the public media.

In addition, Poland has refused to participate in the two-year scheme for the resettlement of 160,000 refugees who have accumulated in camps in Greece and Italy, referring to security considerations, and is still fluctuating on the issue of the transition to the euro.

Polish Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro believes that the European Commission's decision to initiate a sanction against Poland is political and insists that the government will continue to implement the judicial reform launched.
The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, has signed two new laws on the National Council of Judges and the Supreme Court, which are part of a controversial judicial reform.
