American intelligence warns against the dangers of Chinese smartphones
Thu Feb 15, 2018 11:07 pm
Several high-ranking FBI, CIA and NSA staff members spoke this week on spyware from Chinese smartphone manufacturers.
TechCrunch writes about it.
Problems with Huawei and ZTE began in 2012, when the House of Intelligence Committee of the US Congress called them a threat to national security through close cooperation with the Chinese government. The following year, they were forbidden to sell products by American government officials.
"We are deeply concerned about the risk of gaining control over our telecommunications network by companies that are bound to a foreign government that does not share our values," said Chris Wei, director of the FBI.
Huawei responded that the US government is restricting their business, and the company itself operates in 170 countries and poses a threat to cyber security no more than any other provider of telecommunications equipment.
Last month, the head of Huawei Richard Yu said at the CES exhibition that the company managed to conquer the Chinese and European markets, but not the American one.
This statement sounded after the last time a deal broke between Huawei and AT & T, again at the request of lawmakers. For Huawei this has become a big blow, as most smartphone purchases in the US go through operators.
Meanwhile, Huawei has tried to redouble its efforts to sell sales through retailers in the US. However, in the end, the company was in the center of the new scandal, because it was disclosed in the preparation of fake reviews of its flagship smartphone Mate 10 Pro. The reviews appeared on Best Buy and were written under the Huawei-based Facebook competition.
White House guests and employees have banned the use of personal mobile phones while staying in the western wing of the residence of the president of the United States.
