Italy blocked Juan Italy blocked Juan Guaidó recognition of Venezuela's president in the EU recognition of Venezuela's president in the EU
Italy became the only country that voted against the compromise proposal of the EU on the recognition of the Venezuelan President Huang Guaidó before the EU Foreign Ministers meeting in Bucharest, thus blocking the decision.
This was reported by the Italian agency ANSA, citing sources in European diplomatic circles.
The proposal to recognize Guaidó as the interim president of the country before the election was presented at the meeting by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The agency notes that the decision was not intended to recognize Guaidó officially, but hinted at it.
As a result, at a meeting in Bucharest on Thursday, the EU foreign ministers did not make a joint decision to recognize the leader of the Venezuelan opposition as an interim president, pointing out that this step is right to make each of the 28 EU countries separately. In this case, a contact group was set up on Venezuela, to which Italy entered.
Earlier, Foreign Minister of Italy, Manlio Di Stefano, said that Italy was against Guaidó's recognition, because "a country or a group of third countries can not determine the internal policies of another country."
