Fri Mar 11, 2016 1:24 am
He said he would support this measure if it was clearly differentiated from those which had been already introduced, namely sanctions related to the Russian aggression in Ukraine's east and the Crimean annexation, Pifer told Interfax on Thursday.
At the same time, he suggested waiting for the Russian court ruling in Savchenko's case and see what happens afterwards. Pifer said he had no doubts she would be found guilty.
He also stressed that the Russian leadership had to have a clear understanding of conditions for the sanctions to be lifted, noting that unless there were a clear distinction between various kinds of sanctions, they were unlikely to achieve a desired result.........

Putin personally promised Merkel to return Savchenko to Ukraine, - media
Sat Mar 12, 2016 10:21 am
Moscow expects that Kyiv will agree to hold elections in the “Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics” while Putin sees possible release of Savchenko as a public demonstration of the Kremlin's willingness to compromise able to stimulate manageability of the Ukrainian authorities.
Serhii Rakhmanin wrote in his article for ZN.UA citing own sources, Censor.NET reports.
"According to our sources, the Russian president has personally promised Angela Merkel to return Nadiia to the homeland (most likely by granting her a pardon and subsequently exchange for captured GRU operatives). At the same time the passing of a verdict to her was postponed as the Kremlin master's reaction to violent protests near the Russian diplomatic missions in Ukraine," the article reads.
"However, having Savchenko's release in his plans, Putin pursues another goal: he seems to be inclined to believe that her stay in a Russian prison makes his life harder while being at large in Ukraine, she may turn into a problem for Poroshenko, who is far less decisive than the brave prisoner, who has said from behind the bars that "Russia can be made knuckle under if one have stomach for it..." Rakhmanin wrote.

Ukrainian doctors may get permission to visit Savchenko
Sat Mar 12, 2016 10:25 am
The team of Ukrainian doctors, who were trying to visit and examine Nadiia Savchenko in jail, were on their way to Kyiv from Rostov, but returned. They are currently in Kamensk-Shakhtinsk waiting for permission to visit the Ukrainian pilot.
Savchenko's sister Vira told Censor.NET correspondent.
"The doctors left for Ukraine today. However our ministers told them to return when they were already at the border. The new hope has evolved that they will manage to get inside the remand prison," Vira Savchenko said. Nadiia's sister confirmed that she called Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Ella Pamfilova and her assistants. "Pamfilova said that the doctors should be issued visit permits," Vira Savchenko said.
It should be reminded that the Ukrainian servicewoman and MP Nadiia Savchenko said that only Ukrainian or Western doctors would be allowed to examine her and she would fend away the Russian ones. Kyiv has sent a team of three doctors. They were waiting for permission to visit Savchenko in Rostov. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the doctors would not get visit permits as Nadiia Savchenko demonstrated a defiant attitude to the court.

Kerry's and Biden's harsh statements on Savchenko's case are real breakthrough. Russia will not make a good deal, - lawyer Novikov
Sat Mar 12, 2016 10:31 am
Nadiia Savchenko's lawyer Ilya Novikov told about the results of his talks with U,S. politicians and diplomats regarding the case of Ukrainian pilot illegally held in Russia saying that a real breakthrough happened this week.
This was announced by one of Savchenko's lawyers, Ilya Novikov, on his Facebook page, Censor.NET reports.
According to him, the main thing now is that Nadiia Savchenko started to drink water: "During the previous week, it was like a ticking timer at my ear all the time. It was difficult to live and work. Now we have at least another ten days - plenty of time to think of it. Now the focus has shifted to diplomacy."
Novikov said that the breakthrough came earlier this week. Secretary of State Kerry and Vice President Biden both made quite harsh statements.
"The United States does not recognize Savchenko's trial an internal affair of Russia. They believe that after the 'LPR' militants captured her, she was taken to Russia by force, so they demand to release her immediately without any conditions. I asked the same question at every meeting for a week: "Did the administration really mean what Kerry said?" Today, I received an answer from the person who knows about the whole situation. "Yes, we really mean it," he wrote, adding that "there are people in the Congress who are much more aggressive. One of my buddies called Minister Lavrov a "cruel bastard, whose place is in the Magnitsky sanction act." But sanctions are managed by the State Department, not the Congress, although the support of the Congress may encourage the administration to act more resolutely."
The main outcome as of today is that Russia's "No" in response to demands of the U.S. to release Nadiia Savchenko does not satisfy the U.S., and the conversation does not end. The U.S. does not recognize Savchenko's trial as an internal affair of the Russian Federation. In the remaining days before March 21, when the verdict will be announced, political wheels will continue to spin. However, nothing pleasant for the Russian leadership is going to pop up; Russia will not make a good deal," the lawyer summed up.

Taras Shevchenko commemorated in South Florida Ukrainian community
Wed Mar 16, 2016 12:27 pm
The Southwest Florida Ukrainian American community commemorated one of the greatest, if not the greatest, son of Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko (18141861) last Sunday with a special program at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Religious and Cultural Center (the “Oseredok” to Ukrainians). In his “Zapovit” (My Testament) Shevchenko wrote: “And in the great new family, the family of the free, with softly spoken, kindly word remember also me.” Ukrainians all over the world do this every year during March.
Professor Vira Bodnaruk of Venice, who chaired the committee organizing the affair, professionally emceed the program. It consisted of recitations of Shevchenko’s poems and singing of his songs, in addition to a brief but comprehensive keynote address by Neonilia M. Lechman of Venice. She managed to convey the greatness of Shevchenko, who was born a serf, yet rose to become professor of Imperial Academy of Arts, and, most importantly, he gained eternal love and admiration of Ukrainians thanks to his art, poetry, patriotism and his prophetic vision which resonates even now.
The United Choir directed by Lubow Ingram of Venice began the program with the singing of Shevchenko’s “Zapovit,” while the public, as is the tradition, was standing with respect.
Later the choir sang two more of Shevchenko’s songs. The thunderous applauses were accorded the very young performers, 6-year-old Sofiya Tkach and 9-yearold Roksolana Tkach, students of Pine View School in Osprey, and North Port’s Glenallen Elementary School students Anastasia, 11, and Natalia Kudelko, 8, who recited Shevchenko’s poems and sang his songs to the delight of the audience.
Other participants of the program were Petro Fridrich, Roma Steckiw-Long and Anya Rejnarowycz.
The attendees also had an opportunity to view a selection of publications on display, courtesy of the Ukrainian Language Society.
Food and refreshments can be consumed onsite, or ordered for takeout.
It is recommended that “kovbasa” (kielbasy),” varenyky” (pierogies) and “babkas” (special Easterbreads) for takeout be preordered by calling 941-786-5256.

Shaun Walker Russian kangeroo court. She was detained before the alleged event even happened.
No justice or rule of law in Russia. A wild land, out of control, under the watch of paranoid dictator Putin.
And the Russian people sit like docile sheep.
I have nothing but disgust for Russia and its people. You simply can't sit idly by as attrocities of this nature, not to mention Putin shooting down MH17, happen.
But the Russian people sit like zombies. Too scared to do anything. Like North Korea, or Stalin's Russia of 70 years' ago.

But see post below.
Verdict not yet announced.
But Russian press have already said what the verdict is!!

He also noted that the text of the verdict translated into Ukrainian was submitted to her March 25. "She handed over both documents to me saying that there was no need to keep this garbage. We discussed current developments. I showed her the picture of American pilot Nancy Harkness Love. Nadiia was very surprised how much she looked like her. She thought first that it was her own old-fashioned picture - one cannot help but think about the transmigration of souls after that! We had a laugh about it," Polozov wrote.
He also noted that Nadiia asked to congratulate her mother Maria as she was going to celebrate her birthday tomorrow.
"She is upset that she misses this day the second year in a row being unable to celebrate it with her family. We discussed her case and figured out that the verdict would come into force April 5. She is not going to appeal it and forbids the lawyers to do so.
Unfortunately, we failed to dissuade her from going on a dry hunger strike. She plans going on it April 6," he wrote.

The Spy Game: What Moscow Really Wants From Savchenko Exchange
Wed Mar 30, 2016 1:24 pm
Few should be surprised that the Kremlin has floated a proposal to exchange Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, recently sentenced to 22 years in prison, for several Russian nationals in U.S. custody. Even if those Russian nationals included the convicted international arms trafficker Viktor Bout, who is serving a 25-year prison term for a conspiracy to supply MANPADS to a Colombian terrorist group, and the former Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko, who is serving a 21-year term in a U.S. prison for drug smuggling.
The proposal is likely not politically feasible in Washington. This seems clear enough from the strong denials from the U.S. Embassies in Moscow and Kiev. Moreover, the fact that Russian officials are going public is essentially an acceptance it has failed to sell the deal. At the same time, Russia is still scoring important political points that might yet yield the desired results.
The Kremlin’s primary objective is to impress upon Washington that the United States should cease its practice of arresting Russian nationals in third countries on charges brought in the United States. These arrests are often made as a result of sting operations by undercover U.S. government agents — both Bout and Yaroshenko’s arrests were stings. Moscow has made little secret of its displeasure with such U.S. acts, which it views as an illegal extraterritorial application of U.S. law.
Moscow is making the point that the United States should no longer apply such practice to Russian nationals. And in doing so, it is resorting to the old Soviet toolbox — creating leverage to exert political cost, then offering a “fair trade.”
During the Cold War it was inconceivable that the Unites States would kidnap a Soviet citizen abroad without triggering a superpower crisis. Russian leaders see value in reverting to the full “superpower parity” mode — not only in Syria, but across the board of Moscow’s complex but important relations with Washington. It is part of the Russian game to regain “street cred” from any future administration in Washington. It is also a great sell domestically — “taking care of ours” and standing up to the U.S. bully..................
