In Germany, Facebook has been accused of abuse of personal data
Tue Dec 19, 2017 11:05 pm
The American company Facebook acts contrary to the European standards for data collection and processing
To such a preliminary conclusion came the experts of the Federal Anti-Monopoly Office in Germany, informs Deutsche Welle.
The department emphasized that the company, which besides the social network also owns the WhatsApp Messenger, "collects any kind of user data from third sources" and attaches it to a Facebook account. Third sources, besides WhatsApp, are also called the platform for the exchange of Instagram videos and photos that also belong to Facebook, as well as the websites of other operators that are technically linked to Facebook.
As a rule, information about the behavior of users in the network is collected without the knowledge of the users themselves, noted in the department. Therefore, the volumes and extent of data collection that the American company is doing is in contradiction with the norms in force in Europe, the report says.
Similarly, experts from antitrust authorities point out in their analysis that Facebook occupies a dominant position in the German market. Against this background, they believe that the company should take into account the lack of real users of Germany to switch to another social network.
The company itself denies such statements by the agency. Representatives of the American Internet giant emphasize that popularity is not identical to the dominant position on the market. Another argument of the company is that today in Germany, the user uses the Internet on average seven applications or applications, and half of German Internet users do not use Facebook at all.
Since 2016, the agency has been conducting an official investigation into Facebook for violations of the rules of user data collection. The decision is expected not earlier than June 2018.
On November 21, it became known that in 2016, hackers stole data from 57 million customers and drivers of an online taxi service Uber.
